Introduction: Fake Fried Chicken

There's nothing quite as satisfying as homemade fried chicken. Well, besides grandma's fried chicken that is. I always loved when my mom made "fried chicken" for dinner. It wasn't only until recently that I realized this chicken was baked, not fried! That's why it's called "Fake Fried Chicken." This "fried" chicken is baked in the oven, and absolutely delicious!

I have a deep fryer. It's large, clunky, and uses a TON of oil. Not to mention it's rather smelly and I can only cook a few pieces of chicken at a time. Deep frying is great, fun and tasty. But if you want a great tasting, fried chicken feeling without all the hassle, this will be your go-to recipe! Plus, you can cook a lot more without having to worry about fitting it in the fryer, or the oil temperature dropping to low! Stress (and smell) free is the way to be!

I love this recipe because it's just so easy. All of the ingredients are already in the pantry. This is one of those "late night," "got to get something on the table," recipes that the family will love!


  • 8 bone in chicken thighs
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black or white pepper
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 3 tbls melted butter
  • oil

Step 1: Preparation

  • Remove the skin off of your chicken and cut any access fat off. I'm using chicken thighs, but you can use legs, or a mixture of both if you prefer.

  • In a large bowl, mix the flour, salt, pepper and garlic powder together.

  • In another bowl, beat the egg, then mix in the milk.

  • Pour the melted butter onto a baking sheet and add enough oil to generously cover the bottom of the pan. You want the oil and butter to be a little bit less than 1/4 inch layer over the bottom.

Step 2: Bread the Chicken

    • Take a piece of chicken and thoroughly coat it with flour.

      This is the part where my personal recipe deviates from my grandmothers recipe. My grandmother only coated the chicken once with flour. I personally like to double bread the chicken for a thick crust. If you don't want to double up on the crust, place the chicken on the oiled tray.

      • Dip the chicken into the egg mixture and then back into the flour. Place the chicken on the oiled tray.
      • Repeat the breading until all pieces are coated and back on the tray.

    • Step 3: "Fry"

      • Bake the chicken in a 350 degree ferinheit oven for 25 minutes.

      • Flip chicken over and continue to cook for an additional 25 minutes until crisp and cooked through.

      Step 4: Extra Crispy!

      This is another one of my personal twists to a great recipe. I like my fried chicken crunchy! Yes, the original chicken is crisp, but this stuff is just great, and it's really simple to do.

      • Remove the chicken from the oiled pan and place on a clean baking sheet.
      • Place the chicken under the broiler and cook an additional 2 minutes per side, or until crispy.

      Step 5: Serve and ENJOY!

      Oh, how succulent these guys are! Look how golden brown and delicious they look! They look just like fried chicken!! Best Fake Fried chicken recipe, hands down!
