Introduction: Fancy Led Baby Mobile

Starting,

I came up with this project to help a friend with his : baby-distracting problem. As you all might know baby's tend to get noisy or restless.

This is why i wanted to create a baby-mobile which uses an RGB led that changes colors while rotating so it would probably draw the baby's attention.

*The picture above is just a concept idea*

Step 1: Designs & Files

Here are the designs used for the assembly of the parts that need to be cut out in a lasercutter.

Step 2: Material List

For this project i am using a few materials found around my house and school environment. In a previous post i uploaded a concept idea of how the product is supposed to look.

The baby-mobile i have in mind consists of a few materials which are listed below:

- Acrylic(100x100cm should be enough)

-Acrylic tube

-Arduino(uno)

- RGB led lights

- Stepper motor(28BYJ-48)

- Stepper motor(driver)

- Lead bullets(5 mm)

-Acces to a lasercutter

Step 3: Step 2: Gears

The idea is to spin a decorated ring like a baby-mobile with a nice looking RGB light behind it. At first i tested how smooth the gears rotated by cutting them out in wood. I did this because its a cheaper alternative than making mistakes in acrylic.

I had the size of the gears right after the second try and they ran smooth with the outer ring. The gears are easily made from www.geargenerator.com

Step 4: Step 3: Bottom Plate

Now to make the outer ring balance and rotate without needing much power i balanced them on small lead balls which are placed in little carving. The sockets for the lead balls i made with a simple drilling machine.

The Acrylic tube is supposed to go through the hole in the center of the supporting plate and will function as the backbone to carry the baby-mobile.

It should be carrying the bottom-plate by putting a pin thru the tube but this is unbalanced and i don't know for sure how to solve it.

Step 5: Step 4: Cutting the Box

The box that should be containing the arduino and the stepper motor will easily fit within the box. The measures of the box are 8x8cm but i recommend having the side walls higher maybe 10-12 cm if you want to cover the cable and arduino.

Step 6: Step 5: Balancing the Pieces

So now we have the box and the pieces , you need to balance the carved part of the outer ring on the lead balls. After this you can put the box and the acrylic tube in place and put the pins thru the tube beneath the bottom plate.

I also forgot to mention you need to make a hole at the upper part of the tube so you can hang it on your ceiling with a simple hook.

Step 7: Step 6: Issues

I realized that the pin idea will not work well because the bottom plate will not stay stabilized while the outer ring spins around.

The only thing that might have worked is the extra bottom plate design which has 4 holes in it and you would need to pull something like fishing-wire through them and connecting them to a single ring.

if you connect 4 points by an even length of wire it should be staying stable. The outer ring spins around not the bottom plate so if the wires don't hit the outer ring it should be safe to assume the outer ring will spin around without issues.
