I love the look of Mongolian stools. They combine comfort, practicality, and beauty to bring warmth to the home! I'd admired them online for months before deciding to add one to my own home...but with Mongolian stools costing well over $200 at stores like PotteryBarn and West Elm, I wanted to find something to adorn the home without breaking the bank.

Enter the faux-project world. This project makes Mongolian stools attainable for the everyday home by using faux fur, a re-purposed stool, and diy-friendly attaching techniques (superglue: main competitor for duck tape in home projects).

The entire cost ends up being well under $25, depending on what materials you use. So let's get started!

Step 1: Collect Your Supplies

The entire project should take well under half an hour (not including drying time). If left to dry overnight, your faux Mongolian stool will be ready to use first thing in the morning!

You will need:

  • A stool (any kind of material works well. I've used a wooden stool before, but in this case I used an IKEA Marius stool I got in the as-is section or $2)
  • Poly-fil or batting
  • Faux Fur, at least 1/2 yard by 1/2 yard (again, I used a faux sheepskin rug from IKEA)
  • Superglue

Step 2: Stage for Assembly

Place the stool in the center of the bolt of faux fur. If you need, you can trim the fur to give a 6-inch overlap around the stool edge. As I used an IKEA faux sheepskin rug, I did not need to trim anything.

Step 3: Stuff the Stool

Using the Polyfil, stuff the space between the stool and fur top to the desired level of fluff. I made my top relatively flat, as I want cats to be able to rest on top of it as well as feet!

Step 4: Secure the Fur to the Stool

Apply superglue to the bottom surface of the stool. I was liberal in applying glue, as the faux sheepskin has some weight to it. I glued the sheepskin around in a counter-clockwise fashion, making sure to overlap the faux fur where needed to avoid side bulges. Hold each portion down for about 30 seconds to allow the glue to adhere.

Step 5: Weight and Wait

Use something heavy (such as a texbook) to weigh down the faux fur. Let sit, undisturbed, overnight.

Step 6: Enjoy Your Mongolian Stool!

After a night of drying, your faux Mongolian stool should be ready to use! It's perfect for guest seating, resting your feet, resting pets, or yourself!
