This instructable will show you how to fix a Kenmore stack washer with some simple diagnostics.

STEP 1: What Went Wrong...

To give a little background this washer was making loud banging sounds as it ran (see the video above.) The banging sound was very regular which led me to believe it had to be something loose and connected to the motor somehow.

STEP 2: Open Wide!

There are 2 screws on the bottom of the front panel. Once removed, slide the panel down before pulling it off. This exposes the drum, motor, transmission and other major components of the washer.

STEP 3: Here's the Problem

Looking under the drum I could clearly see that the belt was damaged. As seen in the photos, it was shredded and barely holding together. The loose flap was swinging around banging into stuff, making the loud noise.

I used the part number off the old belt to buy a new one for $15 at a local appliance parts store. This part is also available online for $10 but would take 7-14 days to ship.

STEP 4: Replacing the Belt

First off, the idler pulley is spring loaded and is designed to keep tension on the belt. Give it a good inspection and consider replacing this part, if needed.

Replacing the belt is a little tricky but not too bad. The easiest way is to wrap the belt around the motor and idler pulleys, compressing down on the idler, and begin wrapping the belt around the pulley under the drum. Once initiated, roll the drum pulley around until the belt has seated fully in the groove (just like putting a chain on a bicycle.)

STEP 5: It's Fixed!!

Give your washer a test run and put the front panel back on. You're done. It's really that easy!!

i am looking for a part for the tension pulley above the motor on my Kenmore 90901 series dryer, stacked. both the pulley went and trashed the blt.

I removed the front control panel from a Kenmore stackable washer/dryer. Now I can't get it to reattach. I'm trying to get the clips that have springs on the bottom to properly catch when I tilt the panel back into the opening to attach it. Please help!

What if my spin cyle works but my start does its an electral problem my best guess is

My first thought is the timer is bad. This is the box behind the dial which controls all the wash cycles.

Check all the cycles and make sure they work. If they do then it's more likely a start switch or motor capacitor. Something like that.
