Introduction: Free Megaphone (megfono Gratis)

About: I am leaving Instructables, soon. I am very upset with the turnaround that has the page to post the manufacture of a dildo. Me llamo Osvaldo Julio Schiavoni I speak Spanish, not English. I use automatic tran…

About 20 years ago I was in charge for a time the young men of the Church. Common was that we had sports or outdoor recreation. For those cases, I made a passive megaphone, ie without electronic amplification, those that were used for centuries to direct the voice forward, minimizing the dispersion, which in practice is almost equivalent to an amplification, and it is really effective.

A few days ago, during my bike rides, I found thrown in the trash one of these washing machine agitators, like that I used at that time, and although now I don't need a megaphone, I picked it up and brought it home to the only effect of making this instructable. I hope that some readers will find it useful.

Step 1: Lets See That We Have (veamos Lo Que Tenemos)

This agitator is slightly more complicated than 20 years ago: It has a central cone that must be removed. That will be the first step. To do this, must be cut in the first place the thinner end of the rotor, in order to introduce a saw blade in what would now call "the horn" and thus remove the annoying central cone.

After removing the central cone, you have to match the interior of the horn as much as possible. I'm not an audio expert, but I suppose that any irregularity on the inner surface of the speaker will influence negatively the final result.

Step 2: Handle (manija)

Our megaphone should have a handle for comfortable grip. To this end, the easier I will make four holes in one of three fins, using a piece of metal pipe, heated on the gas flame. Obviously, each hole is to put a finger. Then, using a hot wire or a tin solder, I removed from the fin the part that is not needed.

Step 3: Sacar Las Aletas (remove the Fins)

The remaining two fins could remain in place, that does not alter the sound, but aesthetically are deplorable. Will remove about a while. Could do with the soldering tin, but the saw is more practical and fast. I had to rotate the blade 90 degrees to do so. In some places, I got carried away and opened a crack in the base of the fins, which I'll have to close.

Step 4: Cortar El Borte (remove De Edge)

The circular border around the outside end of the horn has two drawbacks: first, having an inward bend, the sound is affected negatively. On the other hand, the diameter is too large unnecessarily. So I marked with indelible fiber line about two inches from the outer edge and cut with scissors can remove it. When I reach the remains of fins, I had to cut them with saw because scissors was not strong enough to cut.

I used the stone bench to tidying up the cuts, and a cutter to remove burrs.

Step 5: Embocadura (mouth)

The mouth has to adjust to one's mouth, so the voice will be fully enforced to the speaker. As this horn has a relatively thick trunk, I just had to make two chamfer cuts to it take the semicircular mouth form. If it had been smaller diameter, I would have made a mouth with a plastic that covers my mouth and attach it to the trunk of the horn.

Step 6: Tapar Las Grietas (cover the Cracks)

To cover the cracks that occurred in two or three places when I remove the fins, I used tinkerer putty. I applied it using two spatulas, a wide to prepare, and a narrow to apply. I had to do it in stages, but as the putty hardens quickly, it was no problem. Between coats, I sanded the surface to avoid imperfections join. Not only cover the cracks but I covered the grooves that ran under the removed fins, so that the inner surface of the horn was as close as possible to ideal.

Conclusion. I don't know if the fact that the inside of the horn has been matted by thesandpaper will made negative influence. Maybe yes, maybe no, but right now my purpose is simply to teach to build the device, I do not care for maximum efficiency of a device as simple as this.
