Funny Dyed, 3D Printed, Easter Egg Cup

To have a fun egg cup for easter season, I modeled and printed a basic shaped cup. Then, I painted it with acrylic paints.

Supplies

3D printer: Zortrax - M200 Plus

Filament: ABS, Diameter 1.75 mm, White Color

Cutter, Acrylic paint, Paintbrushes in different sizes, Varnish

Step 1: Step 1: Modelling the Cup

I modelled the cup in Rhinoceros 5.0, then convert the file into an STL format to be sent to the printer. Here you can find the file to print your cup holder on your own!

Step 2: Step 2: Cleaning the Printed Model

I used Zortrax M200 Plus to print my model. There is a video that shows the process. It took about 3.15 hours and 3,6 gr ABS to print it. When printing it, the printer added some filler materials to support the model. So, they need to be removed to be ready for use. Some parts were harder to be removed, so I used a cutter to do so. Be careful though!

Step 3: Step 3: Painting the Cup

I have used acrylic paint and markers (posca) for making a different look on the cup. First, I applied white paint to have a layer of paint before coloring it. Then, I colored it according to doodles I made on paper.

Step 4: Step 4: Finishing With Varnish

Since this cup will be cleaned, I used water-based varnish. I applied the varnish with a clean brush. The only problem was, that I paint the details like the eyes and mouth with alcohol-based pens to make them thinner. However, when interacting with varnish, they dissolved which wasn't quite pleasant. I recommend using only water-based paints for those who wanna try out to make this egg cup. Step 5: About the Project

This open design project was done as part of the ID736 Open Design and Distributed Creativity course, at the Department of Industrial Design, Middle East Technical University, in the 2021-2022 Spring semester. The purpose was to carry out a small project to openly share online.
