Introduction: Game of Thrones Music Box

The Game Of Thrones opening theme is one of the few themes that I enjoy listening to, so I decided to make a storage box that plays it.

This is a project that I had in mind for a while now. I spent a long time looking for an MP3 player that plays the music once the power is connected but I did not find one. So I had to settle for a player that has the on/off button but I still have to press play.

Initially I wanted to the music to start playing once the box is opened by installing a button right under the lid, but today's MP3 players has the play button as well.

This project is very simple to do and it can be customized to your liking.

Step 1: What You Need for This Project

A wooden box

Thin wood pieces (I had an empty clementine box)

Wood stain

Game of Thrones stencils, I went on the internet and
printed the Valar Morghulis and Valar Dohaeris, and the sigils for houses.

An MP3 Player

Speakers, I took one from a toy, choose one that is big enough to be loud but small enough not to take all the space in the box.

A headphone jack

A USB type B to mini-B (I pulled mine out of an old printer)

Two magnets

Soldering iron or electric tape

Scissors

A black sharpie

Glue

Felt

Step 2: Painting and Drawing

Remove the hardware from the box; the hinges and the lock at the front

Apply a coat of stain to the box, I opted for the semi dark color and one coat was enough in my case.

let it dry; I left it overnight but a couple of hours is usually enough.

Now the hard part, drawing the sigils and logo:

At the beginning I wanted to make a real stencil by cutting the sigils out and fill in with spray paint or a sponge. But after many failed attempts, I ended up drawing them by hand. I drew the Starks, Lannisters and the Baratheon sigils. Then I called in the big guns (my daughter) to draw the Targaryen sigil, and she did a great job. The letters in the VDM logo were free handed. To draw the logo I glued the picture to a thick cardboard and cut out the logo then I used it as a stencil, I used the sharpie.

Then I applied two coats of clear varnish to seal and protect the paint and the drawings. Then I let it sit overnight.

Step 3: The Audio Section

Cut the Head phone jack and expose the wires. There should be three wires one black and two other colors usually white and red. Connect the black wire and one of the other wires to the speaker. tuck the other wire out of the way. You can solder the wires to the speaker or twist them and cover with electric tape.

Test it by connecting it to the MP3 player.

Glue the speakers to a corner of the box using a hot glue gun.

Drill a hole in the back of the box for the USB and secure it place with hot glue.

Measure and cut the thin pieces of wood. They will be used to separate the audio section from the storage section. See the picture for better details.

You will need another piece of wood to cover the MP3 section. This piece will be secured in place with a magnet, one on the box itself and the other on the piece of wood.

Now add the MP3 Player, connect the headphone Jack and the USB to charge it.

Step 4: Finished Product

Add the hinges and the lock.

I added royal blue felt to the bottom of the box and the lid that hides the MP3 player. And I covered the speakers with black felt.

Now I can listen to the Game of Thrones opening Theme (I have it on loop)

I uploaded a video to youtube to have a better feel for it.

Thank you and keep building.
