The Garden of Innocence is a non-profit organization that provides interment services for abandoned and unidentified babies who do not survive. This instructable is written as a guide for an upcoming workshop being conducted by the People Who REALLY Build Things! in which we will manufacture a couple dozen urns. They will be delivered to the Garden of Innocence for their use as the need arises.

You'll notice the use of rough pine with many imperfections in it. This is at the suggestion of the Garden of Innocence to remind us that we are all full of imperfections.

Step 1: Tools and Materials Needed

Tools

Table saw or chop saw
Sander or sandpaper
Router table, router and bits
Drill motor and bits

Materials

1x3x25" pine (per unit)
1x4x6½" pine (per unit)
4 wood screws
Wood glue
1½" wide masking tape

Cut list

1ea. 1x3x6" (straight cut ends)
2ea. 1x3x2½" (45° cut ends)
2ea. 1x3x6" (45° cut ends)
2ea. 1x3x6½" (straight cut ends)

Step 2: Build the Base and Lid

Cut a piece of 1x4 to a length of 6½" and lay in a 3/16" cove around the perimeter of the better looking side. Cut a piece of 1x3 to a length of 6" and lay in a cove around it too.

Step 3: Cut the Sides

You may want to do this on a chop saw, but we felt it better to do on a table saw as we are building quite a few.

Adjust the blade to an angle of 45° and adjust the fence so the finished piece is 6" long. Pass the board through the blade , then turn the cut piece around and pass it through again to cut a 45° angle on the other end. You'll need two of these.

Adjust the rip fence for a cut length of 2½" and repeat the process. You'll need two of these also.

Step 4: Rabbet the Lid

Take the lid and adjust your Router table to rabbet in a ridge around the under side of the lid 13/16"wide and 1/16" deep. This will ensure a good glue joint when we attach the lid to the sides.

Step 5: Glue the Sides Together

On a clean and flat work surface, lay out a 22" long piece of masking tape...sticky side up.

Starting at one end, place one of the short pieces on the tape with the miter cuts facing up. Next, where the miter cut comes to a sharp edge, place the miter cut of one of the long pieces right next to it. Knife edge to knife edge, so to speak. When it's tight and square, lay the long piece down onto the tape. Continue until all four sides are stuck to the tape.

Apply a thin coat of glue to the inside of all the miter cuts then "fold" the sides into a box. There should be enough tape left to close the box. Wipe off the excess glue and set the box on a non-stick surface such as a piece of heavy plastic.

Step 6: Glue the Top On

Apply glue to the top of the box and to the rabbet in the lid. Square things up and set it onto the box. Set a heavy weight on it and allow the glue to set up. Wipe off the excess glue with a damp paper towel.
