Introduction: Gear Spinner by G.ear.Z

The fidget spinner has been bought by so many people, you can see that almost everyone has one in their hand all the time. They are simple but fun to use and helpful for increasing focus. But this is a toy that will stay popular for around a month and then the spinner will be thrown in a drawer, never to be touched again. So why not add to the spinner? We have decided to add to the spinner. Now there are gears on the ends of the spinner and in the middle. This design spins just like any other spinner.

In the picture above is the CAD design of the spinner. Bearings are bought from the market and are not printed. As you can see, the pegs were not in this design, which was one of the mistakes we made. They were added to the frame after the picture was taken.

Step 1: Upload Files Onto SD Card

The design has already been done by us, all you need to do is upload them to your own SD card. You can contact Sebastian for the CAD files. The file is an stl file, which will be converted to a gcode once uploaded onto Cura. From Cura you will put the file into the sd card, which will be put into the 3d printer.

Step 2: Print

After the SD card is in the printer, select the file via the printer. One problem we had was the nozzle being dirty. Make sure to clean the nozzle on the printer, or else the spinner parts will not print. The printer will preheat and print all the parts, which will take a few hours. Let the printer cool down completely before taking the parts off. If you take the parts off right after it has printed, the parts may break or the surface of the printer burn your hands.

Step 3: Assembly: Part 1

Here is what you'll need for the assembly:

  • The 3D printed parts
  • ABEC 9 bearings with dimensions 8mm x 22mm x 7mm
  • Sandpaper

1: Sand down the lateral area (red shaded regions) of the pegs on the frame so that the gear fits on just fine and spins nicely. Do not sand too much, or else the gears will fall off while spinning. Just one or two rubs around each peg is enough. One thing you can do is not sand down any of the top of the lateral area of the peg. It will take some effort to get the gear in, but the gear will never be able to come off. If you see any sharp edges on any of the parts, sand them down, because all of the parts will be spinning really fast and could hurt you.

Step 4: Assembly: Part 2

Next, you will attach the bearings on the gears. They should pop right into the the gear. If not, sand down the inside of the gear. The bearing should not slip out, so like the peg, do not sand the gear down too much. You will also need to put a bearing into the middle of the frame. After putting the bearing in, put the cap on top so that the bearing doesn't come out.

Step 5: Putting the Gears On

In the final part, you will attach the gears to the frame. All gears are the same, so it does not matter which gear goes on which peg. If the peg needs to be sanded down more, sand it down more. The gear should take a little effort to spin, if putting the gear on the peg takes no effort, then the peg was sanded down too much.
