Gelatine Bird Seed Wreath!

3/4 cup flour

1/2 cup warm water

3 tablespoons light corn syrup

1 pkg. unflavored gelatin

4 cups bird seed

bundt pan

nonstick spray


In a large bowl, stir the gelatin into warm water until dissolved. Whisk in the corn syrup and flour.  
Stir well to make a paste.
Pour the 4 cups of seeds into the paste and mix till it is very well combined
press a layer at a time firmly onto mold

you will notice in the morning it has become really hard and looking kinda white.

Just turn the pan upside down and the wreath will slide right out on to a drying rack till completely dry.....careful not to break it though.


All that's left is to tie a ribbon and hang it for birds to enjoy!!

use a round disposable cake pan - I bought 3 for a dollar at the dollar store

then I used an empty toilet paper roll for the middle - built the birdseed around it so that I would have a circle/wreath

How long do these keep in warm or cold storage? Can they be frozen?

Let it set for 24 hours and ready to hang. The corn starch glues it together rain or shine. Just made 2 one for the front yard and one for the back. Birds love it.

Brilliant! I bought a wreath like this at a fund-raiser last year, and gave it as a Christmas gift. It was my dad's favorite gift! He loves watching the birds. I'll have to make them this year for more people! The wreath I bought had cranberries & holly leaves on the surface as decoration - I bet you could stick them to the pan surface with some of the gelatin mixture first, then pour the seed mixture around and press it in.

SueL31, look at the Salvation Army or Goodwill (or any thrift store) for a bundt pan or copper jello mold, even old tupperware would probably work.

i used to make something like this when i was young, and to hang it i used to submerge a spiral of wire with a loop sticking out into it whilst it was wet. It made for very easy hanging and held together pretty well to the end while the birds ate off it.
i think if you did a few loops around this it would be a very sturdy way of securing it, and would probably help support birds who may land/perch on it.

I just googled it for you and it seems very safe for all birds!

Gelatin is a hydrocolloid (water-loving) material, high in amino acids, and can absorb up to ten times its weight in water.
Gelatin is a pure, unique, nutritional protein providing many of the essential amino acids. It is not chemically modified, nor produced from genetically modified materials, and as such is entirely natural.
