Glitter Egg Bombs are a really fun activity to do with the kids! There's something about a broken egg filled with glitter and confetti that kids go wild for! Maybe its the glitter, the confetti, or just getting down right messy! I think it's a combination of all 3! Either way, egg bombs are a ritual for our family on Easter at this point. My kids just love getting glitter bombed, getting messy, and seeing all the pretty colors fall around them. They are really easy to make and you probably already have all the supplies on hand! Go ahead, give them a try!!

You Need:

Eggs
A pin (or something sharp and pointy)
Egg dye OR 1Tbs vinegar, 1 cup water and 5 drops food coloring
Confetti or colorful paper
Glitter (optional)
Funnel (or paper rolled into a funnel)
Coffee filter (or tissue paper)
Scissors
Clear Nail Polish (or glue)

Step 1: Hollow the Eggs

Using the pin, poke a hole in the bottom of the egg. Carefully poke a few more holes around the first hole to widen the opening. You need the hole big enough to insert your funnel and confetti but want to keep it as small as possible. You can always make it bigger later if needed. Now drain the whites and yolk out of the egg. This can be a little tricky. You might need to shake the egg a bit and puncture the yolk to get it all out. Repeat this with all the eggs and thoroughly rinse out the eggs.

Step 2: Color the Eggs

Prepare your egg dye as instructed on the package or mix 1 Tbs of vinegar, 1 cup water, and 5 drops of food dye (color of your choice) in a small cup. You can prepare multiple cups to dye the eggs in a few colors if you like! Submerge the hollow eggs in the dye and let them sit for 3-5 minutes. Carefully drain the liquid and allow the eggs to dry.

Step 3: Make the Confetti/Glitter Filling

You can either use pre-packaged confetti or make your own. If your making your own, first cut small 1/8-1/4in strips of assorted colored paper. Then cut the strips into little pieces of confetti. Now mix the confetti with some glitter, if your daring enough to use it that is. If you don't want to use glitter (because its a hot mess and sticks to everything) that's OK! You don't have to. The confetti alone is tons of fun!

Step 4: Fill the Egg Bombs

Place the eggs into an empty egg container to keep them upright. Using the funnel (or paper rolled into a funnel shape), fill each egg with 1-2Tbs of confetti/glitter. You don't need to fill them all the way, but you can if you want a HUGE explosion! Warning: filling them all the way is a HUGE mess. But! The bigger the mess, the more fun, right?? Hehehe. Next, cut small circles out of the coffee filter just big enough to cover the opening in the egg. Apply a thin coat of nail polish around the opening and let it get tacky for about 30 seconds. Place the filter over the opening and press the edges down to seal it. Let it dry for 5 minutes and your ready to get cracking! (pun intended!) If you're using glue, it may take longer to dry (up to 12 hours). Read the instructions on your glue package for further details. I used instant-dry clear top coat nail polish because lets be real, busy parents don't have a ton of time and there is nothing worse than waiting for glue to dry! Mine dried REALLY fast! Super score!

Step 5: Bomb Away!

Now for the fun part!!! Take the bomb and break it on your child's head! Remember, DON'T ENJOY IT TOO MUCH (this is kind of hard sometimes..)! The eggs are surprisingly stronger than you think, and need a bit of pressure to crack open but it doesn't hurt to have them popped on your head, I promise!. I don't recommend throwing them at your child, really..don't do that. Just apply pressure with your hand until it pops and the confetti and glitter fall all over. These bombs are sooo much fun! But, they are rather messy! I usually pop them on my kids heads outside where I don't have to worry about all the glittery cleaning up. This year it was too cold to do it outside so we did it in the shower. I was able to wipe most of it up and the tub contained the mess. Plus, it was super easy to wash out all the glitter from their hair! Another fun way to use the eggs (that's less messy for the kids) is letting them smash the eggs on the sidewalk.
