Introduction: Gluten Free Onion Rings

Hello Instructable Family!

It's been over a year now since my husband found out he was allergic to gluten, and the dietary changes have been an adventure so far!

Spoiler Alert!! With this realization , we had to cut back on tons of foods we used to love, including Onion Rings!

Bound and determined to get the best of both worlds, I present to you a crispy and delicious onion ring recipe, Sans Gluten ;) Let's begin!!

P.S- I have attached a video tutorial, as well as written instruction. A little bit for everyone :)

Step 1: Ingredients and Hardware

Ingredients

  • 1 egg
  • 1/8 cup oil
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup all purpose GF flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 large onion
  • 1/2 cup GF flour ( for coating)
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • Oil ( for frying)

Hardware

  • Mixer
  • Spatula
  • Pot
  • Tongs
  • Knife
  • Measuring cups
  • Large and medium bowl
  • Cooling rack and pan for catching any grease

Step 2: Mix a Little

Mix the egg, oil and milk on low speed, with a mixer for 1 minute.

Step 3: Mix Some More!

Add 1/2 cup flour, salt, and baking powder.

Mix until smooth, Set aside

Step 4: Ring Time!

Slice the onions into 1/4 inch thick cuts

Seperate into rings

Step 5: Oil !

Fill your pot with oil, at least one inch deep.

Let the oil start to heat up, on medium heat

Step 6: Coating!

Pour the remaining flour into your medium bowl.

Add the pepper, and mix.

Step 7: Batter Up!

Begin by coating your onion rings in the flour and pepper mixture

Next, dip the coated onion rings into your batter. Let any excess batter drip off.

Step 8: Fry, and Cool

Place battered Onion rings into hot oil.

Fry the rings until you have your desired shade of brown

Flip, and fry the other side.

Take finished Onion rings, and place on Cooling rack.

Continue coating , dipping and frying the rings until all have been cooked.

Step 9: Enjoy!

Mmmm.

You have just successfully served yourself up a plate of tasty, hot, crispy, onion rings!!

Serve with your favorite dipp, or none at all. Perfect as a side to a meal, or a snack all on its own :)
