This is a great idea, you could also cover the whole arctic with kitchen foil for even more effect.

so my understanding is that you rig up snow machines to lay down snow in areas that are rapidly melting? Wouldnt the new snow just melt with the old snow just as fast?
Reply 14 years ago on Introduction
No.Manufactured snow is denser than natural snow and takes longer to melt

an guess what snow machines use electricity and where does that come from....

My apologies for not answering sooner...a bout in hospital is my excuse!
The wind turbines are complete with their generators, which in turn provide the power for the snow machines via heavy duty electrical cables. The turbines are on aircushion barges so they can be moved around to wherever they are needed. Essentially, if there is a good snow cover there is no need for remediation, it is only these areas where earth or rock is exposed absorbing the sun's radiaton that need the snow cover to provide the albedo effect. Also open water creates a problem so the turbines on their air cushion barges can be floated out to the nearest ice shelf and use the wind power to steadily increase the ice and snow cover out over the open water to improve (again) the albedo effect.

oh my thanks on that great explanation and i hope you are better

Sweet! But this is still just "buying time," right? It can't be a solution... Can it?

Yes this is buying time, until we can figure out how to handle the effects of global warming on food production. We have many hybridized food stuffs which grow well in the benign climate conditions which prevailed over the past 100 years or so, and since we would have to hybridize them again because of climate changes we need a bit more time to accomplish that. It is not the complete solution....our wee planet has gone through several changes over the past 10's of thousands of years, but since we have the technology to at least try these ideas at a lot less cost than bailing out banks and auto companies it would be prudent to at least run a pilot scheme as suggested.

its helps undo what we did. not completely but it would help. the main problem is is that as the more snow uncovered and the more earth shown, the faster the process goes. its kinda scary. sense snow is a very good reflector of sun heat, and normal ground and sea is the worst. so the more it melts, the more heat we get from the sun, which makes the snow melt faster. i forget what the curve is called. heres an example:

1.....The albedo value--i.e., the percentage of solar radiation that is reflected from a surface--of sea water is only 5-10%, whereas the albedo value of fresh snow is 80-90%. Accordingly, once the disintegration of an ice sheet has proceeded to the point where free water surfaces appear, the rate of further disintegration is very much accelerated due to the low albedo value of open sea water. 2...Solution is to reinstate snow and ice cover and delay the melting of the Arctic Ice Cap beyond the September crisis level. 3...So we'll make snow. First of all we'll do that in the marked locations since these are the ones which provoke rapid melting. 4...And how are we going to do that? We'll use 2 MegaWatt Wind turbines and electrically powered snow blowers to manufacture snow to deepen the coverage in selected areas. 5...As the Arctic Winds blow so does the snow coverage increase courtesy of the WindTurbines (and of course by normal Arctic Snowfall). 6...Turbine Foundations littering the Arctic are nullified by using Hoverbarges to move the Turbines to location and using the Hoverbarge Platforms as the foundations. 7....As one location is remediated, the Hoverbarges can be brought on cushion and moved to new locations. 8....Support vehicles (such as SnowCats) and other equipment would all be electrically powered since the Wind Turbines have the generators anyway. 9...Manufactured snow has a higher density than natural snow and compacts more, so it takes longer to melt. 10..Most of the locations are in Canada, so it becomes somewhat of a Canadian project 11..A pilot Proof of Concept could be cobbled around one of the Wind Turbines at Port Burwell on Lake Erie...a localised project in Ontario, Canada That's the Basics....

So, you think that man can do something about something he had no control over or was any cause of, by doing something to reverse it? Ha!
Reply 14 years ago on Introduction
Nobody said anything about reversing anything. The proposal will slow things down in the Arctic. We're buying time with this using stuff we've already got. Are you suggesting we should not try?
Reply 14 years ago on Introduction
i think wat he is suggesting is that we turn on our aircon open the doors n cool the earth a little just so we r all dead n leave the problem 4 the next gen. i just think that we cant fix the problem, we cant slow it down. we should just wait. n see wat happens, cuz chances r the earth will correct itself. like a human wen u get hot u sweat. the earth will get hot, the ice caps will melt the extra water will increase evap and make more rain, cooling down the earth via cloud cover. n possible so far as 2 make an iceage.

You're pretty close to the mark with the ice caps melting increasing the volume of FRESH water into the ocean causing the Gulf Stream to dive sooner because of the change in density creating a mini Ice Age with the glaciers starting to march south again and because the Northern Hemisphere temperatures plummet, instead of rain lots of snow fall further adding to the glaciers.
So, the latest concerns are not to do with global warming so much as a tipping point where the above scenario takes place suddenly causing rapid changes in climate that food production cannot cope with. You may get your wish by starving to death as would most of the next generation. However, if we give the proposal an honest try the inevitable that you portray could be delayed somewhat and give our species a fighting chance....OK?
Reply 14 years ago on Introduction
Because that sounds like such a great idea...
Also, if we all died, how would there be a next generation?
:)

Nowhere does it say that the human species is predominantly the cause of global warming. What is offered here is technology to alleviate the rate of global warming by reinstating the snow cover albedo effect in the Arctic....yes buying time, until we can figure out how to handle the effects of global warming on food production for example. We have many hybridized food stuffs which grow well in the benign climate conditions which prevailed over the past 100 years or so, and since we would have to hybridize them again because of climate changes we need a bit more time to accomplish that.

These again god how I hate the Global warming guys. Global warming is not created by man!

if u really look in2 history, the earth heats up over a period of bout 200-300 years then plunges in2 iceage 2 correct itself. we r just in the start of the end so 2 speak. we didnt cause this 'global warming' thing we just helped it along. we r like the coffee of global warming
