Introduction: HPD F1 - Evo

This is a radio controlled 1:10 scale F1 car intended for competition racing.

Before you start I want to encourage you to be quick to report any problems you encounter. The quicker we correct the problems the easier it will be for the next person.

Bill of materials

Following list is for your convenience. If you prefer Torx screws or Tamiya front springs you may try. Feel free to replace to anything compatible. You can probably even use some Imperial measurement screws if you so wish.

Suggestion: Buy more to have spares. The springs are especially easy to lose.

Assembly

  1. Insert front chassis into rear chassis. Use the M3x10 screw to hold them together.
  2. Mount the front damper mount with the countersunk screws.
  3. Add the ball end on the rear of the chassis

Assembly

See video, steps:

  1. Ensure that the 3mm pin is freely moving, with minimum play, in all holes
  2. Place the camber screw (M3x18mm socket head)
  3. Lock the camber screw with the camber_screw_block, secure with the M3x6mm screw.
  4. Use the camber screw to attach the camber_socket. Carefully, do not screw too far.

Step 4: Motor Pod

The motor is mounted on "pod_right" and becomes 70 degrees Celsius. Therefore you will need a heat resistant material in this component.

Assembly

See video, steps:

  1. Place a M3x10 screw in the ball clamp, do not tighten yet.
  2. Place the M3 nut into the socket on "pod_right".
  3. Use the M3x12 button head screw to connect the upper part of pod_front and pod_right.
  4. Use a M3x12 counter sunk screw to connect the bottom part.
  5. Use a M3x12 counter sunk screw to connect the bottom part of pod_front and pod_left.
  6. Use the 4 remaining M3x10 counter sunk screws to attach the pod rear.

  1. Place the m3x14 Button head screws into the motor_pod_stabs.
  2. Place the motor pod on the chassis protruding ball end.
  3. Screw the motor pod stabs on place.
  4. Add the shock absorber.

  1. Screw the M3x12 button head screw to the holes second furthest out.
  2. Screw the spring_holders on the screws
  3. Add side springs.
  4. Thread the side suspension on place.
  5. Secure it on place with the M3x10 screws.

    See video, steps:

    • Add a spacer washer on the diff side of the axle.
    • Add one ball bearing.
    • Insert the axle in the motor pod.
    • Add the second ball bearing.
    • Add the hex drive (with wheel in the video).
    • Tighten the screws to secure.
    • Do not forget about the wheel nuts.

      • Insert the motor from the bottom.
      • Secure the motor with the motor clamp
      • Add pinion.
      • Adjust gear play

        NOTE: 1. the M4x25 is replaceable with M4x30. Should be hexagon head though. 2. The ball end can be any ball end of your choice.

        Assembly

        NOTE: the steering hubs are asymmetrical. There is a right and left and up and down.

        The "down" side of the steering hub has a small pyramid around the hole for the steel pin (the King Pin) while the upper side is flat.

        1. Ensure that the steel king pin is going trough the steering hub. Leave it in.
        2. Screw in the M3 screw into the steering hub until it holds the steel pin. Then unscrew one turn.
        3. Remove the king pin.
        4. Add the M4 screw.
        5. Add the ball end on the "upper side" of the arm.

          Assembly

          As we are using a 6mm axle instead of the customary 5mm we have to use a different ball bearing to what you are used to. This also means that we need to compensate for the thinner ball bearing by inserting a shim on the inside of it.

            Steps (in video):

            2. Add ball bearing.
            3. Repeat until done.

            Step 11: Front Suspension

            2. Slide steel pin from the bottom until it is flush with the top of the steering hub.
            3. Hold the spring above the pin.
            4. Slide the pin through until it is cresting the upper arm.
