Introduction: Halloween Figures Made by Special Needs Students – a Creative School Project

We are a Belgian special education school (BuSO), and this project was created by students with autism (ASS), ADHD, ADD, and other learning differences. After discovering the Halloween contest, our woodwork and creative arts teachers teamed up to guide the students through a fun and inclusive project.

Supplies

MDF-boards, paint, jigsaw, file, safety glasses, hearing protection, colored lights, cardboard, cellphone, music, paper, pencil...

Step 1: Design and Try-out

Students brainstormed and sketched their own Halloween characters—ghosts, pumpkins, monsters—each with a personal touch.

Step 2: Get to Work

The designs were transferred onto MDF boards. In the woodwork class, students learned how to saw and file the shapes.

Step 3: To Paint or Not to Paint

In the creative arts class, students painted their figures using Halloween colors and added decorations.

Step 4: Aaaaand Action!

Some students proposed making a video with music to document the process. They were given full creative freedom—and they delivered an amazing result.

Step 5: The End Result Was More Than a Product Alone

This project was entirely created by students with special needs. They worked together as a team, supported each other, and showed incredible enthusiasm and creativity.
