Introduction: Spare Key Spider Web

This is no ordinary Halloween themed door decoration. It contains a hiding spot for your spare door key!

I was inspired to create a hiding spot somewhere convenient to the lock and also hidden in a way that no one would expect. Can you guess where they key is? It's attached to the black & orange spider on the right hand side. Fun feature: the spider is attached to a retractable key ring, which means that you can extend it and unlock your door conveniently!

Step 1: Supplies

To create this Halloween decoration you'll need:

  • Cardboard
  • Black spray paint
  • Pom poms
  • Yarn
  • Spiders
  • Ribbon
  • any extra decorations, like a garland

and also a

  • Hot glue gun
  • Scissors
  • Tape

For the spare key hiding place you'll need a:

  • Spare key
  • Retractable key ring
  • Small piece of pipe cleaner or a rubber band

Step 2: Trace & Cut Two Rings

Trace two circles on a large piece of cardboard. The circles should be different sizes, and create a large ring. I found some circular kitchen bowls and traced them. Another method is to take a piece of yarn. Attach a pen to the end & spin it around a center point.

Cut out the cardboard ring.

Step 3: Paint the Ring Black

Using the spray paint, cover both sides of the cardboard ring. Let it dry.

Step 4: Cut & Tape Yarn Strands

Cut out four pieces of yarn and tape them to the back of the ring. Cut another piece and tie a knot in the center, connecting all of the pieces of yarn together.

Step 5: Weave the Web

Cut out a long piece of the black yarn. To create the web, tie knots at each intersection of the pieces of yarn.

Cut a smaller piece of yarn and create the inner ring.

Step 6: Attach Your Spare Key

Now for the secret hiding place! Attach the key to the retractable key ring. Then, use the hot glue gun to attach the large spider.

Step 7: Secure the Spider

Then, glue it to the right hand side of the cardboard ring.

Step 8: Pom Pom It Up!

Cover the cardboard ring with pom poms! I chose to to stick with ones in a Halloween color palette (orange, green, purple, black).

Step 9: Add a Handle for Hanging

Cut a short piece of ribbon. Add hot glue to both ends and press it against the back side of the cardboard ring.

Step 10: Some Spiders & Garland Garnish

Glue a spider to the center of the web and also to the end of the dangling piece of yarn. Then, flip the wreath over and glue a garland around the edge.

Step 11: Try It Out!

Hang it on your front door and try it out!
