8-pin ham radio mike connectors are the easiest way to interface a PC with a ham radio for thinks like SSTV. For our http://hsbp.org/rpi-sstv project, we only used two 1 mm thick wires (one for transmit control, one for sound), however the the connector was designed for much thicker wires. To avoid ripping the soldered wires out of the connector by accident, we applied black Sugru to the base of the connector, and now we have a stable connection.
