Introduction: Having a Super Pi Day Wedding

About: The name comes from the First Star Trek movie, that pretty much says it all.

Pi day comes around every year. But super Pi day is a once in a century event. So, after my son and his bride to be became engaged they decided to make their wedding their once in a century event. So they scheduled it to be on the date of Super Pi Day, 3/14/15. Or as the decimals go. 3.1415

Thus the super Pi Day wedding of the century plan was born and began to take shape.

Step 1: Planing and Paperwork

Planing a wedding involves a lot. Everything from sending out invitations and coordinating with all the relatives to finding the place to have the event. It's months of work and preparations and negotiations.

I wasn't much involved in that part of it. So I really can't say to much about how to do it. And besides, what anyone else plans is going to be very specific for them anyway. But I can say that if you want a Pi day wedding one thing you really need to do is to develop a Pi day theme.

And you need to start thinking Pi.

Just make your thinking circular and divide by half and there you are.

Pi Paraphernalia

I remember a lot of Pi related things started showing up. Like Pi Mugs and Pi T shirts. And cuff links with 3.14 on them. It's amazing what is out there since its a popular thing. Just don't go to overboard. That being said I have to admit, the Pi watch was pretty cool. I am specifically not asking him where he got that from.

Pi Invitations

Being on a budget and with lots of people to coordinate with there were some innovations used when it came to invitations. My son made them himself and had them printed by Shutterfly. Not what you would think of in terms of standard invitations but it definitely worked and stuck to the theme. And the date was pretty hard to miss.

The wedding App

Something else that helped a lot was the wedding app. The one they used is called "Wedding Party". We discussed putting a link up to it but decided that since it has a lot of last names and such that we should preserve everyone's privacy and just mention the app. If you are planning a wedding it might be something for you to look into. It is not a substitute for paper invitations but it can help people to know how things are progressing.

Step 2: My Greatest Investment

This is a personal note, and I am not certain if this is the best place in this Instructable to inject this, but---

Many people concern themselves with making investments. They invest in real-estate, or stocks, or gold or any number of such things. I chose to invest in my children. It's sometimes a risky thing to do. As a single dad I pretty much committed everything to it but considering the end results I got, I could not be happier. I have three mature adult children who actually don't hate each other. Kind of unusual in today's world. Definitely worth the investment.

(Psalm 127:4, 5) 4 Like arrows in the hand of a mighty man, So are the sons of one’s youth. 5 Happy is the man who fills his quiver with them. They will not be put to shame, For they will speak with enemies in the city gate.

Step 3: Practice

After all the buying and planing and notifying is done and the clock is counting down as the calender is counting up, its time for practice.

Get everybody there. Get them all lined up. Let them learn what they are supposed to do. It's a good idea.

I did not suggest the Star Trek T shirt. That was his choice. I only noticed it later. I suppose not a bad choice for the son of Vyger. I wonder where they got that idea from?

Usually, after this part is where you all go have a nice dinner. It's the calm before the storm.

We went to a special waterfront restaurant where they give you a mallet and a bucket of things from the sea and you get to beat them into submission. It was pretty fun and very filling. No pie though.

Step 4: Getting Down to the Wire

So, its the day of the wedding. I spent the day with the guys. After all, we were all together in one apartment.

The day before we had all been to one of those wind tunnel places where you get to learn skydiving. Free-falling through the air. Was it a symbolic thing, a statement about getting married? Nope, just a bunch of nerds having fun.

On the wedding day we all went to a barber shop and got hot shaves and trims. After snacks and a shave, (and a few efforts to stem the bleeding), we were good to go. There was a little tie straitening and such but mostly the crew was assembled.

What about the female half? I don't know really, I have to make that judgement from all the pictures that were taken. Looks like it was a little more complicated.

Step 5: The Event

As things got ready to begin people found their seats.

ASL

There was a special section set aside for the deaf. Lilly works with hearing impaired children and is fluent in ASL. Ben has also been studying ASL for several years and is fluent in it also. They have many friends who are hearing impaired and made sure that they were provided for at the wedding.

The talk was a Bible based wedding talk. There were vows, rings, and introductions and then it was all done.

This is a short video clip at the beginning of the wedding mentioning Pi day.

Sorry the audio is not that great, its a little tinny.

Step 6: Pictures and a Much Enlarged Family

There were a lot of pictures taken, these are just a few.

Step 7: Pies From the Pieman

For dinner there were snacks and people were invited to bring their own favorite pie recipe to share. But the main course for the evening was ----- drum roll ---- meat pies!

The wedding couple catered the dinner from 314 pies of Seattle. They specialize in meat pies but also have sweet pies. They have a fascinating history and are one of the new crowd funded businesses funded by kickstarter. You can read their story here:

I had the lamb pie and thought it was really good. They brought a large selection and everyone was invited to go to the truck and take their pick. After everyone was full there were still more pies left to take home for another day. It was a really great way to do a dinner, a real Pi dinner.

Instead of a wedding cake there was, of course, a multilayer pie.

And then there were some of those other special things like fresh strawberries with a chocolate fountain and multiple flavors of punch.

I dare say that by the end every one was just totally pied out.

Step 8: Just Fun

During the reception a "photo booth" was set up on the stage. There were some props there and people could take whatever kinds of pictures they wanted. It turned out to be a lot of fun. I went through the 160 pictures and picked a few to show here. Who knows, if by popular demand the rest could all end up here also.

It is a really fun idea, if you are planing any kind of event you might consider doing it.

Step 9: 3.1415926

Music, dancing, or just visiting and eating. It continued on until 9:26. That is the time when the the bride and groom had chosen to leave. Why?

3.1415926

It made for the perfect Pi wedding.

Now that is an anniversary date that will be impossible to forget!

And of course, a final send off by the wedding party in true Star Trek style.

Step 10: Tomorrow

It will be 100 years before another super pie day, 3/14/2115. And we can only guess what the world will be like then. We haven't really done to well at making those kinds of predictions. I grew up when there were no cell phones, in fact no transistors or IC's. None of those major milestone inventions were ever predicted. Sometimes its just figuring out what is coming tomorrow that is the challenge. For a newly married couple, tomorrow is all about possibility. They have quite a few things going for them, but the greatest of them is love, because it is the "perfect bond of union". They have each other.

(Ecclesiastes 4:9-12) 9 Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their hard work. 10 For if one of them falls, the other can help his partner up. But what will happen to the one who falls with no one to help him up? 11 Moreover, if two lie down together, they will stay warm, but how can just one keep warm? 12 And someone may overpower one alone, but two together can take a stand against him. And a threefold cord cannot quickly be torn apart.

And finally from the words and wisdom of Solomon:

(Song of Solomon 8:6, 7) 6 Place me as a seal upon your heart, As a seal upon your arm, For love is as strong as death is, And exclusive devotion is as unyielding as the Grave. Its flames are a blazing fire, the flame of Jah. 7 Surging waters cannot extinguish love, Nor can rivers wash it away. If a man would offer all the wealth of his house for love, It would be utterly despised.”

I wish you and your wife all the best my son.

Love, Dad
