Introduction: High-Grade Electromagnet

This instructable will show you how to make a high-grade electromagnet and unlike other electromagnets, this one is neater and more efficient . It can be used on a crane or just for fun. Enjoy!

Step 1: Step 1: Gather the Supplies.

1. Copper Wire (100 ft. Coiled )

2. Nails(at least 3 inches on length)

3. Batteries((6) 1.5v D batteries or (2) 6v batteries)

4. Knife Switch(DPST)

5. Wire Stripping Pliers(Nose Needle)

6. Multimeter(1)

7. Lensatic Compass(1)

8. Safety Glasses

Step 2: Step 2: Prepare the Electromagnet.

After you have prepared the electromagnet, strip both ends of the wire.
Also, for every two layers of wire you will need two batteries(1.5v). Do not use more than this unless you have a nail that is very long. Then you will need to use more    wire. If you use (6) 1.5v D batteries or (2) 6v batteries) on a two layer electromagnet your battery will     heat up and may explode. Your wire will surely melt or get red hot. Again, for your safety , do not use more than is needed in this instuctable .
For my biggest electromagnet(8 or 9 layers) I need four or five (1.5v batteries).
You should try two layers as a test then try 8 layers.

Step 3: Step 3:Strip and Connect Wires to Knife Switch.

Using the pliers for this task, take four separate wires and strip all ends of each wire. Connect them to the switch.

Step 4: Step 4: Prepare the Battery(s)

Take your batteries together and connect them in parallel or series. Series doubles the voltage(electrical pressure) and the amperage(energy or juice) stays the same, parallel doubles the amperage and the voltage stays the same. One example is if you have three 1.5v 500 mAh batteries in parallel, you will have a 1.5v 1500mAh circuit. Think ahead and make it easy to change the configuration of the batteries. Also the battery circuit will have its own wires (negative and positive) to connect to the switches wires.

Step 5: Step 5: Use the Measuring Devices

Before you flip the switch, test the circuit with the multimeter. If the electricity is flowing, proceed. If not, check all of the connections in the circuit.

If the circuit is complete, use the compass to check the electromagnets strength. The faster the needle turns towards the electromagnet , the stronger it is. Note that before you do this you will need to let the compass point north and south.

Step 6: Step 6: Safety.

In the event that something goes wrong, wear safety glasses and or gloves.
