Introduction: High Voltage Spark Generator

About: Robot enthusiast here :) I build things that (mostly) work, sometimes even as expected. It’s all about trial, error, and a lot of fun!

A flyback transformer circuit was built to generate high voltage sparks. By wrapping copper foil at a small distance, the sparks were able to jump across the gap, demonstrating the principle of high-voltage discharge.

Supplies

  1. Flyback transformer + driver circuit
  2. Thin copper wire
  3. Copper foil sheet
  4. 12V DC supply
  5. Plastic/wood supports for insulation

Step 1: Setting Up the Flyback Transformer

The flyback transformer was powered using a suitable driver circuit. The high-voltage output terminal was identified, while the return ground terminal was connected for stable operation.

Step 2: Electrode Setup

Copper foil was placed at a small gap from the high-voltage terminal. This foil acted as the collector electrode, catching the sparks. The distance between electrodes was adjusted until visible sparks were generated.

Step 3: Testing the Sparks

When powered, the transformer created high voltage discharge across the air gap. This produced visible sparks jumping from the high-voltage terminal to the foil.
