Step 2: Prepare the Pie Dough/Crust

First we need to prepare our pie dough. This recipe makes 1 top or bottom, so you will want to double it if you are making the traditional style pie. We add our flour, salt, sugar to a bowl and mix it together with a fork.

Step 3: Add Butter and Incorporate

Next we add our cold butter, we cube it so it is easier to work with. Now using either a fork, pastry blender, or a food processor, mix in the butter with the dry ingredients. You will continue to mix until the flour mixture turns from white to a blonde color and resembles course crumbs.

Step 4: Add Water and Form Dough

Now we add our water a little bit at a time. Mixing it in with a fork. Then once all of the water is added we use our hands to further incorporate the water. It will feel almost like play dough. Don't over mix/knead the dough. Just until it all comes together nicely. Then form it into a fat disc and wrap with plastic wrap. Next place it in the refrigerator for about an 1hr.

Step 5: Prepare the Apples

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. When our dough is almost completely chilled, so around the 45 minute mark, we prepare the apples. Peel and slice the apples. This is where an apple peeler/corer comes in very handy. I peel my apple, then cut it into large discs, then stack them and cut down around the core. You can slice up the apples whatever way that you like, but try and keep the pieces around the same size.

Step 6: Mix Dry Ingredients for Filling

Now we mix together all of our dry ingredients for the filling. I usually just use my wooden spoon for this task.

Step 7: Mix Dry Ingredients With Apples

Next we add the dry ingredients to our sliced apples, and mix it all together.

Step 8: Roll Out Bottom Piece of Pie Dough

Now we roll out our first piece of dough with will wind up being the bottom crust. Add a little bit of flour to the counter, and roll out the dough into a large circle, you can use your pie pan as a measurement, until it is about 1/8 of an inch or so thick. You want the dough to be about an inch in diameter larger then the pie pan. Now lay it down into the pie pan and gently push it so if fits nicely.

Step 9: Add Apples and Butter

Next we add our apples and then cut up the butter and add to the top.

Step 10: Seal Edges and Trim Dough Edges

Next we seal the edges. There are a variety of ways to do this, one simple way is to use your fork and just press down around the edges. Then take a knife and cut away the overlapping part. Don't throw out the trimmings. You can use this to make a mini pie. :)

Step 11: Vent the Pie and Bake

Next we want to make sure our pie can vent properly. We need away for the steam to come out. You can poke holes in the top with a fork, or you can cut slits in the top with your knife. Then we bake it in the oven at 400 degrees F. For 40 to 50 minutes until it turns nice and golden brown. If it starts to get to brown around the edges, add some aluminum foil to protect it. Now you are done!
