Intro: Homemade Oil/Air Pump From Car Parts

This is a homemade Oil/aAir pump I originally made for my foundry to pump oil but then later just use it to air up my tires around the house.
It work great and airs tires up very quick and it's not loud at all.
I just used an old ac pump off a truck I scrapped and a 3/4 motor I had also off an old furnace.
I had a metal box that was a printer switch box and some cheap parts from radio shack.
Now I used my homemade plasma cutter and cut the top off an old air compressor to use as a plateform but you can just use a 2x6 or 2x12 or just any kind of wood you want according to your scrape pile.
I welded to my base but if you use wood just use some bolts and washers.
Hope you enjoy and have fun.

STEP 1: Instructions and Parts Needed

Here are your parts your gonna need and how I done it.
I also through in a couple of pictures I made before I built it to give me an idea of how I was to do it.
This is a Word document file with instructions and parts needed.

STEP 2: 12 Volt Clutch Supply

Here is a pictorial schematic of how I wired the 12 volt Clutch supply.
You can get all these parts from radio shack or some old electronic equipment like an old treadmill.

STEP 3: Finnish Up and View

Here you can use my pictures to see how I made my brackets.
They are very clear and easy to see how I made mine and you wont have any trouble.
I put all pictures and info in this step so you wont have to keep flipping back and fourth to study everything.
So it's all here for ya.
Have fun and enjoy.

I looking to build a vacuum pump for bagging. This looks an interesting a pretty cheap way of making one. How do car AC units keep lubricated?
thanks and great instructable

An ac system has oil in it that goes through system.

The pump always holds enough oil to keep it lubricated.

now using for air pump or vacuum pump every once in a while add a little to it, if you over fill it it will pump out extra oil, wont hurt tires for some to get in them.

does the compressor got damaged for the lack of lubricant when it pumps air only ?

no because I add a few drops every so often and its still kicking.

It will always have a little inside unless you just run it for hours at a time, but for air tank, tires filling floating toys for pool its great.

Also I use it to vacuum down car ac when it needs a charge.

Nope, I only use it to fill air tank or tires.

About once a year I let it suck up an oz or 2 just to keep it lubricated well.

Without it being a closed system the internals stay lubricated for a long time.

It looks like you used a York compressor like were used in lots of vehicles from the 70s to the 80s. They are known as the king of onboard air by the off road I g community that install them to air up tires. The large ones put out about 9cfm and they are alloild by a internal oil reservoir instead of being lubricated by the freon.

I uses an ac compressor for a quick pop pump for a ram separator. Never thought to use it as an air pump.... Gonna see if it puts out enough to power an impact. Will let you know the outcome.
thanks guys yea it works great and fast too.
I fabricate something like this 30 years ago and work perfect. Add a tank and check valve.
Nice instructable, never thoughtof using a car's AC compressor.

Cheers.
