Introduction: Homemade Pulse Motor and Reed Switch With More Generated Energy

This is a simple working pulse motor and reed switch that can be easily made from materials available at home. Making a reed switch work could be a bit difficult but will definitely works after some careful adjustments.I will mentions the materials used for making it work below.

You will be required to buy few material items like copper wire about 26 to 32 awg and few neodymium magnets, a thin wooden board, cardboard or plastic board serving as platform, solenoid ferrite coil or also called inductor coil. Thicker bigger magnets will work very well for rotor to spin faster quickly. I have used switch ferrite core coil which works pretty well. You will also find more energy generated for lighting 30v neon bulb. A small neon bulb i found from from old electric mosquito repellent.

Step 1: Materials Required

  1. Plastic rotor (you can use a lid of cold cream of this matching size)
  2. Glue or a strong adhesive for sticking magnets equally to four sides of rotor
  3. Copper wire about 26 to 32 awg
  4. At least 4 neodymium magnets of at least size 10mm X 5mm
  5. A paper pin
  6. A neon bulb [ optional ]( i got from old mosquito repellent)
  7. Thin wooden board or you can use card board used for packaging
  8. Power supply of at least 6 volt, could be battery or dc adapter
  9. Shaving blade
  10. Small scissor
  11. Few jumper wires
  12. Multi meter (optional)
  13. A Ferrite core coil (i got from old junk electronic seller)
  14. Some little cardboard pieces for proper alignment adjustment between magnet and coil, magnet and reed switch
  15. A thin stand with pin hole on board for rotor be mounted on for spinning.
  16. Small screw nails for fixing rubber band for inductor coil and ramp for reed switch as seen in image.

Step 2: Procedure

  1. When you get all the materials, take the plastic rotor, insert the pin into its center.
  2. Take rotor stand with pin hole similar as you see in picture and stick it to board with supporting material fixed to the board.
  3. Stick four neodymium magnets equally to four sides of rotor and also vertically equal in between on all four sides.
  4. Make sure all magnets are facing either north or south.
  5. You can now mount rotor on the stand using pin and check if it rotates smoothly

How to make Reed Switch

  1. You can see thin metal strips more clearly in images with length of blade.For more better result i took one strip a little thicker from a battery joint of junk electric racket.
  2. Cut two thin strips from a shaving razor blade and attach them to jumper wires either through soldering or wind with thin copper wire after removing its insulation with candle flame or sand paper.
  3. Insulate the two strip ends with electric tape and wind together with electric tape

Ferrite Core Coil

Ferrite core coil has more than 450 copper winding with a cylindrical ferrite core inside. If you do not get ferrite, air core coil also works. Advantage in ferrite core is that it produces more energy with same current. Attach the core to the board as shown in the video or may use any other way you like. Bring reed switch, rotor, ferrite core together in alignment and make connections as you can see in diagram or video.

You can make wire connections directly as shown in diagram or using breadboard whatever you like. Reed switch requires some directional adjustment for better performance. Follow the video carefully and give power supply from 5 to 6 volts When you find rotor with good speed, you can test energy output to neon bulb by connection as you can see in video. Make sure that magnets, reed switch, coil are aligned properly in parallel.
