Introduction: Homemade Toothpaste for Dogs!

This is a super simple recipe to make toothpaste for your dogs. You should never use human toothpaste as it contains fluoride in it, which is poisonous to dogs. Dog toothpaste can be expensive but, with this cheap alternative your dogs teeth can be clean in no time!

Step 1: Ingredients:

Here are the ingredients needed in order to complete this recipe:

  1. 2 table spoons of cinnamon
  2. 2 table spoons of baking soda
  3. 1/3 cups of coconut oil
  4. 1 beef bouillon cube

Step 2: Take Your Beef Bouillon Cube and Chop It Up!

This is pretty self explanatory, put the beef bouillon cube into a bowl. Then, use the back of a spoon to chop the cube up. Put it aside for now.

Step 3: Dry Ingredients!

Now, measure out 2 tablespoons of cinnamon and 2 tablespoons of baking soda. Pour the two into a bowl together and mix.

Step 4: Coconut Oil!

Measure out 1/3 cups of coconut oil and pour into a bowl.

Step 5: Mixing Time!

Now it's time to mix all the ingredients together. Pour all the ingredients into one bowl and mix! Once all the ingredients are blended and are one, uniform colour, its finished!

Step 6: Finished Product!

Introducing the toothpaste to your dogs.

Allow your dog to smell the toothpaste or, put a small amount on your finger and let them lick it off. My dogs responded to this toothpaste as a treat which meant it was easy to brush their teeth. When you do brush your dogs teeth, you can use a regular people toothbrush (I have a designated dog toothbrush to brush their teeth.) Put your dog in a comfy position to prevent him from running away. Calmly talk to your dog. Put a some toothpaste on the toothbrush and, in a circular motion brush your dog's teeth, aiming at the areas with the most plaque. Try to get your dog not to lick it all away. Wipe of any extra toothpaste and give your dog water. Your dog should now have some nice pearly whites!

What's the purpose of each ingredient?

  • beef bouillon- to make the toothpaste yummy for your pup.
  • cinnamon- to make your pup's breath smell nicer.
  • baking soda- to take away any plaque on their teeth.
  • coconut oil- to hold all the ingredients together.

What an awesome idea, and one I definitely hadn't seen before! I haven't tried brushing my dog's teeth before, just relied on the annual cleanings....but I think I'm going to give this a shot! Thanks for the tutorial!

Thanks for the idea and the instructions. I have been looking for a good recipe for my Golden Retriever because he doesn't really like to get his teeth brushed, but he really liked the taste of this one! You made my day and saved me some money!

You could use water as a substitute, it would do the same job but it may be a bit runny.

What a great idea! And I love the idea of using coconut oil as a binder - I make my own human toothpaste, and coconut oil looks like it would be a much better binder than water, which is what I currently use, since the oil wouldn't evaporate like the water does. So double hurray!

According to ASPCA cinnamon cannot harm your dog, it's non toxic. Unless of course, you give your dog A LOT of it. But in this toothpaste recipe, there are only 2 tablespoons of cinnamon which cannot hurt dogs.

Not trying to get into an argument, it is all about dosage and size of the dog. Maybe add a warning? You would not want to be held responsible if anything gets wrong ;-)

"It takes a larger amount of ingested cinnamon powder to cause problems
in our pets (greater than 1 teaspoon of powder for most pets) but only a
small amount of the essential oil. Large overdoses of the powder or
exposure to the essential oil can lead to low blood sugar, liver
disease, vomiting, diarrhea and changes in heart rate."

They're one of each, brother and sister from the same litter. Thanks for asking! Do you have a dog?
