Introduction: Honeycomb Blanket!

About: Hi! I am a Mechanical Engineer and Crafting Enthusiast.

Make a fun, colorful blanket! This blanket is composed of many little hexagons all crocheted together to make one large blanket. This is a great beginner project, as each hexagon is pretty easy to make. It took me about 10 minutes to make each hexagon, so it is a great project if you have small pockets of free time. I used four colors for the most part, but feel free to add more colors to your blanket. It can also be a great way to put to use the small scraps of yarn around the house!

Supplies

Four different colors of yarn (at least 2-3 skeins for each color) for the individual hexagons

1 skein of yarn of a different color for the border

Crochet hook (I used a Size K crochet hook)

Scissors

Step 1: Starting the Chain

To begin, make a slip knot and place it on the crochet hook (casting on a stitch); then crochet a chain 6 stitches long. To make the chain, loop your yarn around the crochet hook from left to right and pull off your original stitch from the hook.

Step 2: Beginning the Hexagon

After you have 6 stitches on the chain, pick up the first stitch of your chain and cast off your last stitch. Add an additional stitch, and then pick up your second stitch from your chain. Continue this process of adding a stitch and then picking up your stitch until you reach the beginning.

Step 3: Expanding the Hexagon

When you reach the beginning, you are going to follow the same process, but instead of adding a new stitch every other time, you are going to pick up two stitches and then add an additional stitch. You should start to see the shape of a hexagon at this point. Continue to follow this process of picking up your additional stitch from the previous time until you have a row of 8 stitches on each side. When you are done, cut your yarn and make a knot with the yarn and tie off the end.

Step 4: Connecting the Hexagons

To connect two hexagons, place one hexagons on top off the second, with the front sides together. Again, make a slip knot with your yarn and cast on to your crochet hook. This time, pick up the corner stitch on each of the hexagons. Wrap your yarn around your crochet hook from left to right and remove the two stitches from your hook, leaving your loop on the hook. Continue this process until you reach the end of the row. From here, you can stitch another hexagon to the next side of the original hexagon, or you can tie off your row. To grow your blanket, continue this process of stitching two sides together until the blanket is the size you want. I stopped making more hexagons when I had 11 hexagons on 3 sides and 10 hexagons on 3 sides but it really depends on what size you want your blanket to be. When arranging the hexagons, I made sure to have no two of the same colors touching, but I didn’t follow any particular pattern. Feel free to follow the image of my blanket for a pattern or make your own!

Step 5: Adding a Border

Once you have stitched all your hexagons together, it is time to add a border! To do, this I took a fifth color of yarn (dark brown) and stitched twice around the entire blanket, adding an extra stitch when I was at a corner for a smaller hexagon and catching two stitches when I was at a connection between two hexagons. When I went two times around the edge of the entire blanket, I tied off my end and added my signature to one of the hexagons, and it was complete! Ready to snuggle into my completed blanket!
