Introduction: How to Make Your Very Own RPG on Paper
Have you ever wanted to play an RPG with your friends without ever needing to use gadgets? Well, an RPG on paper is a great way to do exactly that without ever needing to use gadgets with limited battery and that eye irritating digital glare.
Step 1: The Foundation of a Good Game
Of course, every game starts with an idea. Think of what your game will look like. Here's a few guide questions to help you out.
1. Is the RPG game you will make based on:
a. A turn- based fighting game?
b. A strategy game?
c. A game with a plot the character will have to follow?
d. The classic "level up" game?
2. Is the setting of your game...
a. Here on Earth?
- Under the sea?
- Inside a mountain?
- In the past, present, or future?
b. In another world?
c. In another dimension?
d. Just in the vastness of outer space?
3. Are the characters...
c. Mythical creatures (elves, dwarves, ogres, etc.)?
e. A combination of everything imaginable?
4. How will your game look like?
If you still don't have an idea of what your RPG game will be, try answering the questions above again. If you're done and already have an idea of what your game will look like, you're ready for the next step!
Step 2: The Player's Statistics
There is no game without a character. To make a character, think of what that character will be like. Of course, the first thing to do is determine the statistics of the character. Here are some suggestions:
1. Name, of course.
2. The pet he/she will have (if you will include that)
3. How much health he/she will have
4. How much mana he/she will have (if you will include that)
5. The stats, mainly:
a. Vitality (or health points)
b. Experience (if you're using a level system)
d. Speed (or Agility, whichever you want)
e. Intelligence (or whichever term you want to use)
f. Dexterity (or overall Speed and Intelligence)
g. And last but not the least, the abilities.
These are just suggestions. If you want to add something else, you can do as you will, just make it as fun as you can.
Step 3: The RPG World Around the Character
The next thing you're gonna want to do is to make the world around the character. This is where the main story or plot of the RPG will take place. The world can be anything; another dimension, another planet, Earth, inside a mountain, underground, under the sea, or pretty much anything you can think of.
Step 4: Interaction
To make the RPG more fun, you can add things the player can interact with. It can be:
1. The player's own house
2. A shop to handle the character's needs
3. A multiplayer setting
4. Conditions that make the game more realistic, such as:
c. Status (such as poison, paralysis, blindness, sickness, etc.)
5. The ability to trade items with other players (if your game is played on multiplayer)
7. The ability to enchant items
8. Customizable settings
Or basically anything. Once you've completed all of these, you can start playing your game, or add more things to it. You can do anything you want, as long as the result will be a fun game to play with your friends. You might even make the game on your computer (if you have one)! The possibilities are endless.
