Mehndi is a green color paste applied on the skin for obtaining various body art designs. Also popular in the Indian subcontinent as henna, it is essentially a flowering plant whose leaves are taken to form a paste that can be applied on various parts of the body to obtain exquisite patterns. Mehndi is a popular tradition for the bride that is very common in Indian as well as Pakistani wedding ceremonies.

It is not uncommon to find women close to the bride wearing mehndi on them while turning up for the wedding in Western attire. Hence, it has become all the more important that the mehndi is done right.

But knowing how to apply different mehendi designs isn’t enough. Here is a brief guide on what you can do to apply mehndi on your hand in the right way possible so that it complements your Western looks.

STEP 1: Prepare Mehndi Cone

A mehndi design is typically applied with the help of cone. You can buy a mehndi cone from a nearby beauty store or simply have one made at home.

The problem with the readymade ones is that they contain some chemicals that may not agree with everyone. For an all natural experience, it is recommended that you create your own cone at home and fill it up with henna paste. It holds a significant advantage as it will not only give you a better color but also stay on longer.

STEP 2:

The narrow end of the cone contains a pin which you should keep safely. The amount of mehndi contained in one such cone is enough to serve you over multiple sittings. Put it back in once you are done with the work.

STEP 3:

You need to hold the mehndi cone in the same manner that you would hold a pen or pencil. Squeeze gently as the paste starts to come out. Initially there will be a black color mixture but soon you will get the light color paste

STEP 4:

Use a tissue paper to clean the excess mehndi from the tip. At the time of application, the tip will continue to get messy so ensure you have a tissue paper at hand to tackle the situation

STEP 5:

The tip of your finger, which is the farthest point, is from where you should start applying the mehndi. Keep moving down from there on. However, if you are doing the mehndi for someone else, start from their palm and then move towards the fingers

STEP 6:

Have a firm grip over the cone and take a close look at the design which you want to create. Squeeze the cone lightly till the mehndi starts coming out in a thin line and run it all along your hands in the desired pattern

STEP 7:

Now enjoy making your very own mehndi to go along nicely with that latest Western attire you were planning to wear to your best friend’s wedding

henna is an awesome plant to know about. it's a mid sized shrub and its leaves, bark, flowers are all medicinal in nature. henna paste and oil from leaves when used on skin prevents and heals many skin disorders like pigment spot loss, bacterial or fungal infection etc.. the same when used on hair and scalp nourishes and strengthens hair follicles and fights against many dandruff causing factors.

it's flowers oil extract is used as a natural deoderant and insect repellent I think. it's bark extracts also have some liver purification properties.

well, do refer online for ayurvedic (medicinal) properties of the plant. we have this plan all over the place in India. we usually just pick the leaves, cleanse them in water and grind them with a mortar to get the green paste.. it's free if you know how the plant looks like ;) and more over u can be sure that it's natural when u make it on ur own..
