Introduction: How to Build a Speaker

This instructable will show how to make a speaker using common household items.

Step 1: Materials

You will need, enameled coated wire (you can purchase this at radio shack), a small plastic 5 gallon trash can, a strong magnet, packing tape, an amplifier, and music.

Step 2: Step 1: Making the Coil

Now you will get your enamel coated wire out and a cylindrical object (ours was approximately 1.5" in diameter). You will wrap your wire around the object, we wrapped ours 25 times, this is because if you have too many loops the coil will get too hot and melt through the tape. Once you get the coil wrapped around the object, carefully slide it off so that it doesn't come uncoiled, place a piece of tape on either side of the coil to hold it together. Finally use a razor to scrape the enamel off of the last 0.5" off of the leads.

Step 3: Step 2: Attaching the Coil

In this step you will flip the plastic garbage can upside down and tape the coil to the top of the can on the outside.

Step 4: Step 3: Connecting the Coil to the Amplifier

You will just need to connect the leads of the coil to the speaker wire outputs on your amplifier.

Step 5: Step 4: Making Sound

Now that you have your leads plugged in just take a magnet (of any kind) and move it toward the coil, it should start making sound, if it doesn't here are a few ways to troubleshoot it, check that the wires are stripped and plugged in, check that you haven't shorted it out by trying to turn it up too loud, also check that the music is playing.
