Introduction: How to Change a Tire

The tires on your vehicle encounter a lot of wear and tear. After some time, it's normal for them to go flat. It's important to know how to change a tire so you can make sure you can safely get to a shop to get your tire replaced or fixed.

Supplies

  • Vehicle supplied or personal jack
  • Lug wrench
  • Tire
  • Optional: torque wrench

Step 1: Park Your Vehicle in a Safe Location

Pull your vehicle somewhere that you can safely change the tire and ensure the parking brake is engaged.

Step 2: Gather Vehicle Maintenance Supplies

Step 3: Place Wheel Block Behind the Wheel

Place a wheel block/chock behind the opposite tire that isn't being changed. Ex: If you're changing the front tire, place the block behind the back wheel so the car doesn't start rolling.

Step 4: Break the Lug Nuts Loose With the Lug Wrench

Step 5: Lift the Corner of the Vehicle With the Jack

See your manufactures' make and model for safe locations to jack your vehicle.

Step 6: Unscrew the Lug Nuts Using the Wrench

Rotate the wrench in a counterclockwise motion until the lug nuts can be removed.

Step 7: Grab the Wheel of the Tire and Remove It

Step 8: Grab the Spare Tire and Place It Onto the Wheel Hub

Step 9: Screw the Lug Nuts Back on Using the Wrench

Screw the lug nuts back on in a clockwise motion.

Step 10: Lower the Vehicle Back Down

Step 11: Remove the Jack and Other Tools From Under the Car

Step 12: Remove the Wheel Block

Step 13: Replace All the Tools

Step 14: Drive Safe!
