Introduction: How to Drop Spindle a Rolag

This instructable shows you how to drop spindle a rolag using a top whorl spindle. It's fun, easy to do, and very relaxing.

Step 1: BoM

Step 2: Draft

Start by drafting (fluffing out) one end of the rolag and twisting a small piece to wrap around your hook. This will be the start of your leader yarn. If you wanted to, you could go ahead and gently draft out the entire rolag all at once, but it isn't necessary.

Step 3: Leader

Spin small sections of the rolag until you have enough length that it's either too awkward to continue or it's just long enough to start wrapping around the shaft of your spindle.

Step 4: Walk

To get the yarn I've spun onto the spindle I "walk" the yarn between my middle and ring fingers. Basically I use those two fingers to wrap the yarn in a figure 8 fashion around my fingers and then when I reach the end, I pop the yarn off the hook and hold it in place on the spindle as I wrap the rest of the yarn onto it. Leave enough length so that you can bring the yarn back up to the hook and wrap it 2-3 times.

Step 5: Spin

Draft out some more of the rolag and then drop your spindle and go. I tend to park (stop the spindle and hold it in my arm or between my legs) and draft and then continue spinning. Remember to keep your non-dominant hand pinching the fiber so that the twist from the yarn doesn't travel upwards and screw up your rolag.

Also remember that if you draft the fiber too fine, it will detach from the rest of the rolag. The rolag is heavy in comparison to what you'll spin so you also want to make sure you have it supported well.

Step 6: Spin & Wrap

Continue to spin, draft, and wrap as you go. If you need to take a break, wrap the yarn around hook several times.
