Introduction: How to Gain Knowledge of the Note Taking Methods
There are times when you need to learn something in a short span of time. You don´t know what to do, you are in panic. Maybe you should revise your notes? Maybe you should write some? Maybe you don´t even have any notes? Maybe your notes are messy? Worry not! This instructable will help you!
Supplies
The materials you are going to need to use the note taking methods in the future are a Pen, two highlighter pens, an ink pen eraser, a ruler. For the digital version you need a tablet, the app GoodNotes, the stylus. To use the app goodnotes, download it, add the template via the plus, and take notes as you would take them in real life.
The usage of a pen is self explanatory, the ruler will be used to outline the design on the note taking methods, the highlighter will be there in case you will need to highlight something out.
Step 1: Learn the Split Page Method
The Split Page Method.- This method can be used for things like organizing different terms.
To use it, split your page in two with a pen, and write the new term you learned on the left, and the definition on the right.
This will serve to you as a small dictionary
Step 2: Learn the Morse Code Method
The Morse Code Method.- This method is used to sort out text.
To use it, find an important term you want to mark down and add a dot next to it. When the term is explained in the text, add a line next to the text.
Step 3: Learn the Boxing Method
- The Boxing Method.- This method personally looks best for me as a template. It is interesting to grasp and easy to read, however it may not work for all cases.
To draw the template for it, write the main title, add boxes of different shapes and sizes, and add a title to each box. Now, write the information within the boxes. Examples where this can be applied is for example on a history lesson, you write the title, let's say World War one, you write the causes, the dates, the important people, the results, the inventions. This method helps especially sort small pieces of different kinds of information.
Step 4: Learn the "classic" Method
- The “Classic” Method.- This method is what you would expect from regular kinds of notes that are well organized.
- There is no template for this method, you rather organize your notes by writing them in a way close to how you may have written them before
It is made by first drawing a margin on the right where you will write down your subject. Then, you write down your bullet point. Under your bullet point, you can write down a sub-bulletpoint that is less important than the first one. You then continue writing your notes like this, until you are done. When you are, you draw a big horizontal line from the start of the paper to the end of it, and write a summary of what you wrote below it.
Step 5: Learn the Charting Method
- This method is useful for people who want to plan date, and add the detail to them.
- You can, for example, write an upcoming event (an exam for example) in the boxes, you can write the date, the days you have left for it, important things to note down, the unit etc.
It works by drawing 5 horizontal lines, and 7 vertical ones. The first vertical line goes a little further than the next vertical lines you are going to draw.
Step 6: Learn to Avoid the Following Mistakes
Note taking is an important aspect. However, it has some things to it you should keep in mind. Such as mistakes you should watch out for. Them being the following:
- Avoid writing down your notes too quickly. if you do this, your notes can get messy and hard to understand. Take your time, and write everything down. Moreover, you will not deepen into what you are writing.
- Focus on understanding on what you are writing. I mentioned this already, but it is worth mentioning again. When you write something, you need to concentrate on what it is that you write, it is important to understand and process the information. You can also try changing a few words if you want to, so you will deepen better.
- Not understanding what you write. This is important, because there are a lot of times when it is hard to understand something you are noting down. Take the time to research what you are doing and make sure everything you noted you understand.
- Not storing your notes.- Notes also serve as a reminder for the test, not just for you to practice to remember. Not storing them in a proper place (like a folder), may cause destruction of your notes, or disappearance of them.
