Introduction: How to Make 12V DC to 220V AC Inverter
Hello guys, In this Instructable I will instruct you to make your own 12v DC to 220v AC inverter with less number of components. In this project I use 555 timer IC in Astable multivibrator mode to generate square wave at 50Hz frequency.

About Inverters :
Inverters are often needed at places where it is not possible to get AC supply from the Mains. An inverter circuit is used to convert the DC power to AC power. Inverters can be of two types True/pure sine wave inverters and quasi or modified inverters. These true /pure sine wave inverters are costly ,while modified or quasi inverters are inexpensive. These modified inverters produce a square wave and these are not used to power delicate electronic equipments . Here, a simple voltage driven inverter circuit using transistors as switching devices.
Step 1: Components Required
Transistors [ Banggood / Aliexpress ]
BC547 - 1 [ Aliexpress ]
2N6292 - 2 [ Aliexpress ]
Resistors [ Banggood / Aliexpress ]
15k Ohm - 4
100k Ohm - 1
Capacitors [ Banggood / Aliexpress ]
0.01uF - 1
0.22uF - 1
Other
IC 555 - 1 [ Banggood / Aliexpress ]
8 Pin IC Base - 1 [ Banggood / Aliexpress ]
Switch - 1 [ Banggood / Aliexpress ]
PCB - 1 [ Banggood / Aliexpress ]
Transformer [12-0-12/3A] - 1 [Banggood]
Heat Sinks - 1 [ Banggood / Aliexpress ]
Step 2: Watch Video First!
This video gives you all the information you need to build your own 12v DC to 220v AC inverter.
During the next steps however I will present you some additional information to make the project even simpler.
Step 3: Circuiting
Here you can find the circuit.
You can see my PCB traces and it is easy to understand while making.
Place all the components on the PCB according to schematic.
Solder all the components carefully.
After circuiting now the time to test with a 220v bulb.
Step 4: You Made It!
That's all guys you made it.
Feel free to comment.

Nice instructable. I want to make this project but I don't have the 2N6292 transistor. Is it possible to use a N-channel MOSFET like the IRFZ-44N instead.
Thanks.

I see you used the BC547 NPN transistor as an inverter setup so both power transistor are not turned on at the same time. I was just wondering why you didn't use MOSFETS instead of NPN power transistors? It would have worked and even used a lot less current wasted in heat. Either way, it is a workable circuit. Nice project.

+1 on the MOSFETS, but also maybe a fuse in line with the 12v supply, for that day when both transistors/MOSFETS turn on at once (failed BC547 or one of the main ones goes short circuit) :(
Otherwise "Bang good" won't just be a company to buy the bits from ! :)

I was wondering what i would havce to change to make this compatable to a 110v circut?
Reply 5 years ago
You can use transformer step-down 110v to 12v... And put it in reverse means out put become input and input becomes output...
Transformer 110v to 12v-0v-12v
Hope this helps
