Introduction: How to Make Beer Bread

  • 1 cup regular rolled oats,plus additional oats for decoration
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 (12 fluid ounce) can or bottle Guinness® beer

Step 1: Preheat the Oven!

The first step is to preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C) so it warms itself to the correct baking temperature while you are preparing the dough.

Step 2: Grease the Pan!

Get the baking pan ready by greasing with butter, lard, Pam cooking spray, or some other kind of grease. The pan should be 8x8 for this recipe.

Step 3: Start Mixing

Start the dough by mixing together the oats, flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.

Step 4: Secondary Mixture

In a separate large bowl, stir together the melted butter, vanilla, buttermilk, and Guinness(R) beer until well mixed.

Step 5: Combine!

Pour the flour mixture into the beer mixture little by little, and gently stir until well blended.

Step 6: Throw It All Into the Baking Pan

This is the point where your greased pan is ready to be filled by the dough. Go ahead and pour batter into the prepared baking pan, and sprinkle with additional oats if desired.

Step 7: Bake Some,

Bake in your preheated oven for thirty (30) minutes. Just toss it in there and watch it brown.

Step 8: Bake Some More,

This is the tricky part. You'll have to turn the temperature down to 400 degrees F or 200 degrees C. You can just open the oven door to let out most of the hot air, the oven will readjust temperature accordingly. Leave the newly formed loaf in the oven and bake for an additional 30 minutes.

Step 9: And Finally Open the Oven Door!

This step is when you'll be really happy in Winter, or really sad in Summer as you will turn off the oven, and throw open the door. This is done for the bread to cool very slowly, for 30 minutes. Remember to leave the loaf inside the oven for this period.

Step 10: Get Ready to Eat!

What you've been waiting for. You can now turn out the loaf onto a wire rack and serve it up with some warm honey or butter. All done; delicious!
