Introduction: How to Make FerroFluids
Today, I am making Ferrofluids. On the internet, I have found ferrofluid was invented by NASA's scientist as a liquid rocket fuel that could be used in a weightless environment by applying a magnetic field, So I decided to lets make one of these in my project. I have covered two demonstrations here;
1. How to Make Ferrofluids with Oil & Toner Powder;
2. Liquid & Dry Phase.
This is a fairly simple experiment and its a good beginner DIY project. For this I am using a Glass bottle, Toner powder, Measuring scoops, Vegetable oil, Plastic container, Water and Neodymium magnets, Generally it went great and I am very happy, I hope you like this project.
Materials Required for Making Ferrofluids :-
- Neodymium Magnets
- Toner Powder
- Measuring Scoop
- Vegetable Oil
- Plastic Container (for Stir fluids)
- Stick
Note: - Use Powerful Neodymium Magnets for Better Results
Step 1: Get All Required Materials

Step 2: Add Toner Powder & Veg Oil
Start by checking all the necessary materials, put a stirring cup, first add the toner powder to a cup of approximately 2 tablespoons, add 2 tablespoons of Veg oil in the second place.
Step 3: Stir Mixture (Ferrofluid)
After adding the essential ingredients, mix well and see if the mixture is less thick, add a small amount of toner and mix it again for at least 2 minutes.
Step 4: Demonstration No.1- in a Container
I used a plastic container here to show how these ferrofluids are attracted by magnets. In these photos I put a few drops of ferro fluid and at the bottom of the container I'm using neodymium magnets and moved circularly to show the effect of the magnetic field.
Step 5: Demonstration No.2- in a Bottle
I used a glass bottle here, where I poured ferrofluid and water into the bottle, all the ferrofluids appear upwards, because the mix of oil and oil floats on the top and then moves the neodymium magnets over the bottle, where the ferrofluid attracts to the magnet. There after poured magnet into the bottle where all ferrofluid stuck with a magnet.
Step 6: Demonstration No.3- in Dry State
Finally, I just added just toner powder into a cup lid and put a magnet in it and then drop a neodymium magnet, you can see that it attracts with a magnet very quickly.

i tried a version of this about a year ago when i was lucky enough to be there when my school printer broke and the toner didn't seem to bind with the oil and the two separated after about an hour but if you shook it up it would mix again is there anything i can do to make it bind?
