Introduction: How to Make a Calzone

I've yet to meet a single person on Earth who doesn't like calzones; they're simply delicious, and there's no proof otherwise. The first calzone I'd ever had was the Piz'ones from Pizza Hut (or was it Domino's...?), and I was hooked instantly. They're like pizzas squared. That may sound hard to believe, but it's true ;-)

So, I set out to find out how to make my own yummy calzones... After a bit of RND in the kitchen, I came up with a pretty good idea of how to make a calzone. However, I won't be giving you a recipe; in all honesty, I make a different calzone every time! But, I do follow the same steps, the same technique, and that is what I'll be sharing with you.

Step 1: Ingredients & Utensils

Ingredients:
  • Pizza Dough - I made mine from a store-bought mix. Use whatever kind of dough you like, but you have to use dough, not crust.
  • Toppings - I used cheese, pepperoni, tomato sauce, garlic salt and oregano, but you can use just about anything
  • Olive Oil Spray - like Pam or Crisco

Utensils:
  • Cookie sheet - with raised edges so you don't make a mess
  • Cutting Board - for cutting your calzone so the cookie sheet doesn't rust
  • Pizza cutter
  • Spatula
  • Pot holders

Step 2: Throw on Your Toppings

First of all, roll out your pizza dough into an oval shape.

When you add your toppings, only work on one side of the calzone, a bit less than half of your oval. We'll be using the other half later.

Now start throwing on some toppings, any kind you'd like. I'd recommend dressing your calzone in the same way you like your pizza, but if you're feeling creative, then by all means, go all out.

Here's the toppings I added:
  • Tomato sauce - most people nix the sauce inside their calzones; a more popular option is to heat up a bit of tomato sauce to dunk your calzones in
  • Pepperoni
  • Cheese - I used shredded cheddar and torn-up slices of mozzarella; I prefer torn-up sliced cheeses because it's much thicker

Step 3: Cover It Up and Bake It

Flip the untouched half of the calzone onto the toppings half, making sure not to leave any holes, cover the entire thing with pizza dough.

Now, spray the top of the calzone with Pam or such, sprinkle on some spices if you'd like (I did garlic powder and oregano), and pop it in the oven. 20 minutes at 450F (that's about 230C for you for-uh-ners ;-) usually does the trick for me, but your mileage may vary, so keep an eye on it so it doesn't burn.

Now for the hardest part of all.

*drumroll*

Wait.

Step 4: Take It Out and Eat It!

Pull your calzone out of the oven and plop it down onto a cutting board. Cut it into strips if you'd like, and let it cool off for a few minutes. Invite your family and friends to share this magnificent work of art with you, which you so deftly crafted with your own hands! Congratulate yourself! Allow people to shake your hand, give you hi-5's, and tell you how awesome you are! You just made a calzone, and mannnn is it good!
