If you take some paper - wrapping, butchers, plain white - and cover the box, it will look better and you can change the look through the year. For me, I find the plastic boxes from a local discount store do very well for storage of paperbacks. It keeps them dust free and I can label the box to its genre/contents.

With some work it is possible to make full sized furniture pieces our of cardboard. I saw an artist who made a full set of living room furniture out of cardboard and it was all so light you could pick up with one finger.
