How to Make a Wooden Kitchen Spoon

For a while I have wanted to make a kitchen spoon but I never got around to doing it.

This time however I managed to find some time to make one, it took me about two hours to make and I ended up with a pleasing and classic hand make wooden spoon.

I hope you enjoy.

Step 1: Marking Your Wood

First off, draw your shape of spoon on a piece of wood.

I based my shape off our favorite wooden spoon.

Step 2: Cutting

Cut out your wooden spoon with either a coping saw or a band saw.

Here is a comparison.

Step 3: Sanding

Sand your spoon to the required thickness I thinned mine down to 9mm, however it's personal preference to how thick you go. Also sand the sides of your spoon smooth by taking out all the saw marks, If you are copying another spoon's shape, keep checking it against your original one because you don't want to sand off too much.

My finished handle dimensions are 13mm wide and 9mm high. The entire length of my wooden spoon is 327mm.

Step 4: Drilling

Drill a hole at the end of your handle, I used a 7mm drill bit.

Step 5:

I found that sanding out the shallow groove was the hardest part.

I used the round wheel of my belt sander to help speed up the process.

Step 6: Hand Sanding

After sanding out a rough groove with my belt sander I finished the groove by hand sanding.

Step 7: Finishing

Once you are happy with how your spoon looks it is time to put a finish on it.

Finish your spoon with a protective sealer such as food safe mineral oil/bee's wax blend.

Remember to use a food grade finish otherwise you won't be able to cook with it.

Once sealed and dry your spoon is ready to use.

what kind of wood did you use?

I think it's Cedar. : )

I wouldn't use varnish unless rated as food grade. get oil used for cutting boards instead. it soaks in and helps keep the spoon from drying out and splitting. It will give many years of service if cleaned and re-oiled every year. Grampa
