Introduction: How to Make a Wooden Mouse Toy

These are the steps needed to make a wooden mouse toy.

Step 1: Materials You Need

  • 2x6in
  • Douglas Wood
  • Orbital Sander
  • Belt Sander
  • Drill Press
  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Band Saw
  • Chop Saw
  • Router
  • Paint
  • Paint Brush
  • Axles And Wheels

Step 2: Finding an Image

The first thing you would want to do is print an online black and white picture of a Mouse that you can recognize from the side easily. Make sure you resize your image so that it's not too big to trace.

Step 3: Cut and Trace Out Image

Cut out your mouse image and also make sure you cut out things that would be too hard to make out of wood and then trace the photo on card stock paper. Once you have traced the image on cardstock, cut it out.

Step 4: Trace Your Cardstock Onto the Wood

Once you have traced your cardstock paper trace your cardstock onto the 2x6” wood. From there once you have traced out the wood you then use the bandsaw to cut the wood. Remember when cutting the wood you can not go in a circle because it is too tight to cut so remember to do relief cuts.

Step 5: Routering the Mouse

When you are done with cutting the toy out on the bandsaw, you then router both edges of your toy. So it becomes circular and it doesn't give you splinters.

Step 6: Sanding the Mouse Toy

Once you have rourted your toy mouse you then sand the toy on the machine sander make sure you sand really well so the steps are easier later.

Step 7: Putting on the Wheels

To put your wheels on your toy, you need to use the drill press. To drill the holes for this toy you only need to drill one hole all the way through to the otherside. You then put glue in the inside of the holes, then you put the axles in and then finally the wheels.

Step 8: Creating the Ears

Once you have glued the axles and wheels and let the glue dry, you then make the ears. To create the ears, find some scrap wood that is large enough to make an ear. When you have found the wood you would like to use trace a circle onto the wood and then use the bandsaw to cut out the ears.

Step 9: Sanding the Ears

Once you have cut out the ears you need to make the ears flat to glue it to the side of your mouse toy. When sanding the ears, put the ear on the sanding machine and then press down until the one bottom side of the ear is flat.

Step 10: Your Painting Plan

Once you have finished your ear you then trace your mouse onto a piece of paper and then draw how you want your mouse to look.

Step 11: The Final Step

The last thing you want to do is follow your painting plan and paint, paint, paint, away. Once you have painted your toy mouse you then let it dry. Then you are done congratulations you have created your mouse toy!
