Introduction: How to Repair Broken or Faulty Headsets
- Must Read This
Hello guys this is my instructable about how to repair your faulty headsets.
First of all there are two types of faulty headsets.
Broken and Shorted
Broken are those in which wire gets broken. Usually wire gets broken from the jack, the pcb or from earpiece you just have to resolder it!
In shorted headset earpiece gets shorted. Sometimes you see one side of headset does not work in that case you have to resolder.from jack, pcb or earpiece if resoldering is not working then your earpiece is shorted. Sometimes both sides does not work. For confirming that your earpiece is shorted you should check it with 9v battery by placing its golden wire on - and other on +. (But not for prolonged time) If your earpiece does not produce a sound effect it means it is shorted. For shorted earpiece you have to change whole earpiece!
Step 1: HOW TO REPAIR BROKEN HEADSET
- Check your Headset from where it is broken.
- If it is broken from earpiece or pcb resolder it simply.
- If it is broken from jack there are two options for you replace or repair jack.
- If you want to replace just buy new one, remove its cover, solder it with headset wires, put cover back and you are done. If you want to repair jack remove plastic cover from it, clean it, resolder, then cover it with heat shrink tube or electric tape.
How to Check Headset pinout and reapir?
- Usually headset pinouts are blue is mic, red/green is left/right, golden for ground.
- Most headset have their own different pinouts.
- To check pinout first of all cut 2cm cover of wire.
- Then place you solder iron horizontally.
- Make a bead of solder on tip of soldering iron.
- Pass wires through that bead.
- Check wires if they are silver from tip. If not pass them again from bead.
- Now take a 9v Battery.
- Place golden wire on - and red/green/blue on + to check on which wire earpiece produce sound.
- Sometimes Blue is ground or left/right.
- Now solder them simply with their respective pinouts. If you solder left wire to right, right to left on jack it does not matter your headset will work fine.
- Headset jack pinouts for three segmented jack are first tip is ground, second is for left and right, third is for mic. Pinout for four segmented headset are 1st tip is mic, 2nd is right, 3rd is left, solder ground to back side of headset jack with first conductive part under plastic. (Usually four segmented is built in jack and three segmented jack is one which you can buy from market.
- Sometimes jack have different pinouts. You check its pinouts (which tip goes to which wire) by continuity mode in multimeter. Place one probe on any of segments and place other on tip. The three segmented jack 1st segment is ground. 2nd is left/right, third one is for mic. Check for which segment which tip gives continuity 0, 1, 2, or 3. On four segmented jack 1st segment is ground, 2nd for right, 3rd for left, 4th for mic. Pinouts of segment is always same but sometimes tip for soldering on jack have different, it is necessary to check pinouts first.
