How to Replace Horizontal Sliding Windows

Step 1: Pull the Window

Begin by pulling the window top towards you until it is out of the sliding track. Then pull up the window bottom. With the help of a screwdriver, force out the window stop from the sliding track of the frame.

Step 2: Remove the Fixed Panel Bar

Proceed to remove the vertically fixed panel bar. If it is held in place with a screw, then remove it. With the help of a hammer, loosen the affixed panel bar from the panel in the frame and gently pull it out.

Step 3: Measure Your Window

As the next step, proceed to take measurements of your entire window opening. From the window sill, measure the entire height to the bottom most point of your window frame sliding channels. This is the height of the wooden support strip. Now measure your new window’s bottom frame that will extend beyond the existing frame channel to the sill. This will give you the width of the wooden support strip. Measuring the length of the sill will give you the length of the support strip.

Step 4: Provide the Support Strip

Use the measurements taken and transfer them a two-by-four to get a new support strip. The purpose of this strip is to support the sliding window sill by fitting into the interior sill. Nail the strip to the interior sill. Apply an even coat of silicone sealant all around the existing window frame.

Step 5: Replace the New Window Frame

From the outside, tilt the sliding window bottom frame into the existing window frame. Make sure it is centered on the opening from the inside. Check for equal-sized gaps around the window. Place the window frame top in place against the exterior.

Step 6: Screw-up the Frame

On the left and right sides of the frame, drill two holes on the interior sliding window channel. Then screw-fix the window and make sure it has been secured in place.

Step 7: Check for Unevenness Around Corners

Do an inspection of the window for gaps or unevenness of area around the window frame. Position the window with screws.

Step 8: That's It! You Have Replaced Your Horizontal Sliding Window
