Introduction: How to Restring a Guitar
Breaking a string while shredding on the guitar happens to the best of us. Luckily, restringing a guitar is easier than it sounds. All it takes is 20 minutes, a few tools, and some strings!
Supplies
- Wire Cutters
- Pack of New Guitar Strings
- Neck Polisher
- Guitar Tuner
- Guitar
Step 1: Taking Off Guitar Strings
Turn each tuning peg to the left, loosening each guitar string. Pull out each string from the headstock and the bridge of the guitar.
Step 2: Polish Guitar Neck
Use an old rag and neck polisher to clean the neck, the body, and the headstock of the guitar. This eliminates dust and disinfects the guitar.
Step 3: Begin Restringing Process
Run each string through the bottom of the bridge of the guitar. Extend them to reach the top of the headstock.
Step 4: Tightening Strings
Run each string through the bridge into their assigned tuning pegs. Apply a small amount of pressure between the string and the tuning peg, but leave enough slack so the string does not snap.
Step 5: Tuning Strings
Now that each string is properly tightened, use a guitar tuner to get each string in tune. (Each string from the bottom up should be tuned to E, A, D, G, B, E)
Step 6: Cutting Excess String
There will be excess string coming out of the tuning pegs. Use wire cutters to eliminate the strings for a cleaner finish.
