Introduction: How to Softmod Your Wii (4.3) U/E/K/J
Ever wondered how to get homebrew applications onto your Wii without a modchip? Well, we have got you covered!
- Wii on system version 4.3U, 4.3E, 4.3K, or 4.3J
- SD Card (1 GB or larger)
- A computer with an Internet connection
WARNING: Softmodding your Wii WILL VOID your warranty!
If you're new to homebrew, you might want to do some internet research about it. You should know the dangers of running homebrew before installing it. Homebrew applications may have FULL access to the Wii filesystem! Use common sense when downloading applications! WiiBrew has a great list of applications you can run on your Wii.
Step 1: Retrieve Your Wii's MAC Address
You'll need your Wii's MAC address to softmod your Wii.
First, make sure that you're on the Wii Menu. If you're not, exit whatever you're using. Then, enter your Wii System Settings. Scroll to page 2 and select the Internet button. Then select "Console Information". This will display your MAC address. Write down your MAC address, you'll need it later on.
Step 2: Download and Extract LetterBomb
You'll need to download LetterBomb. LetterBomb is a Wii message board message containing code to execute the hackmii installer (homebrew installer).
First, head over to http://please.hackmii.com. Then, select your Wii System Menu version. You can check your Wii system menu version when you enter the Wii system settings. It should say something like 4.3U, 4.3E, 4.3K or 4.3J. After that, type your Wii MAC Address. Make sure that the checkbox below is checked. Next, solve the captcha. Nowadays captchas are just a matter of checking a checkbox. Next, you'll have two options, cut the red wire or cut the blue wire. You can cut either. When clicked, you'll download a zip file named "LetterBomb.zip". Extract it at the root of your SD card. Your SD card root should contain a bunch of text files, a boot.elf file, and a folder named "private".
Step 3: Running the Installer
Once you have extracted everything, get back to your Wii and insert your SD card. Then navigate to your Wii message board and go one day back. You should see a message with a bomb, click it. Once you click it, a bunch of technical details will appear. Don't worry, LetterBomb is just doing what it has to do. Then you'll be presented with a scam warning. You'll have to wait around 1-2 minutes. Press 1 or 2 to continue to the installer.
Next, you'll be presented with an installer dialog. It will tell you what can be installed and what can't be installed. Install the Homebrew channel and install BootMii as "boot2". BootMii can restore your Wii if it is bricked, and can back your Wii up.
Step 4: You're Finished!
That wasn't so hard, was it? Now, have some fun with your softmodded Wii! You can backup games, install emulators and much more.
Tell me what homebrew apps I could use, I appreciate every response!
Question 4 months ago
I got to the very end of the tutorial, and everything worked, but now, its just showing bubbles... what do I do?
Question 3 years ago
I've followed the instructions but the letterbomb isn't showing up on my message board. Any suggestions on what could be wrong?
Answer 3 years ago
Make sure your connected to the internet. I had the same problem and I connect to wifi and problem solved.
Answer 3 years ago
Try only putting the files on the SD card and not the zip. I also opened every folder and dragged it over to my SD card. There should be 8 items going on to your card.

Hello, I followed your interactions step by step and I was unable to complete the installation.. I downloaded the letterbomb software using my MAC and I have a 8gig SD card.. Could it be my SD card? Help please, I'd really like to have some help on this..

SD cards above 8gig need to be of the "SDHC" type to work on Wii.
However, if you stay below 2gig, i strongly recommend you to use a simple SD type card.
(Usually you can see this on the front of the SD card)
I hope it helped even though the Wii is becoming a bit outdated but I'm sure there are still a lot of people playing with it.
Have a nice day, Ali.

Maybe it is. I can install without problems.

This method works well for me too.
However, SD cards are a pain: Windows has issues with any device that has a problem on the first sector and because these devices literally wear out that is the first to go; Laptops get dust in these slots as do card readers because of static; Many OSes don't link random USB devices either (I mean they should, but all have quirks)...
the best bet is to buy a name brand from a store you can return it to if it is unreliable and test it ASAP after purchase. Good luck!
