Introduction: How to Solder SMD !

About: Hi, I'm Nemeen, Electronics Enthusiast! I have seen a huge decline in electronics hobbyist in past few years. I started this channel in order to inspire you to create. Hopefully, you will find something that …

In last few decades a new technology so-called SMD which stands for Surface Mount Devices is taking over THT so today in this Instructables I will show you what are SMD components and how to solder them,

So let's get started!

I've also done an instructable on Soldering Through Hole Parts (THT) so check out that as well.

Step 1: Watch the Video !

If you don't want to read all the stuff you can watch my Video

Step 2: Everything We Need !

We will be learning to solder on all different components,

here is my list of components I will be using,

1) Atmega 328P-AU

2) 16MHz Resonator

3) TP4056

4) LED (0805)

5) 100nF Capacitor (0603)

6) 1k Resistor (0603)

Tools we need,

1) Solder station

2) Solder wire

3) Solder Paste

Step 3: Sizes of SMD

SMD components are rectangular in shape. Components have metalized areas at either end of the body and this enables them to make contact with the printed circuit board through the solder. Whereas THT components have leads and SMDs are way smaller than THT and speaking about size SMD have different sizes such as

  • 0603
  • 0805
  • 1206
  • 1210
  • 2010
  • 2512

All these numbers indicate the actual size of the components such as 2512 indicates a length of 0.25inch and a width of 0.12 inch

Step 4: Soldering Resistor, Capacitor, Etc

Place PCB on a flat surface, then secure it in place using tape. Now using soldering iron apply solder on one pad, the push the component in its place the Re-heat the solder and solder one terminal. Now solder the remaining terminal.

This method can be very fast and but cannot be used for components below 0603 size.

Step 5: Soldering SOP IC's

First, Place the component with tweezers on pads and then using fine solder tip and solder the one terminal. Then solder the diagonally opposite terminal and now you can solder all the terminals. Using flux is not mandatory here. This method is quite useful for soldering SOP IC.

Step 6: Soldering TQFP IC's

Soldering TQFP IC is quite tedious so we will use Hot air soldering for this IC package

  • First apply solder paste just enough to cover solder pads.
  • Now place the IC on it.
  • Hold it in place with tweezers and use a Hot air gun to solder it
  • Temperature Should be around 315C (~600F)

Step 7: Thank You !

That's everything you need to know about SMD soldering,
