Introduction: How to Take Proper Care of Your Teeth
Our teeth are our responsibility, of course, and it is up to us to take care of them and keep them whole for as long as possible. Our teeth are exposed to all sorts of things that may cause tooth decay, and without proper and diligent care, we will end up losing them sooner than we think. Some people have extremely resilient teeth, whereas some don’t, but regardless of their resilience, there are no teeth that are indestructible, and if we neglect our responsibilities towards them, we can look forward to a lot of toothache. Not only is it painful, once our teeth start to decay, but it also looks ugly, and we can feel less confident because of it, which may affect the way we interact with people in certain situations, like a job interview for example. If you are to avoid this kind of uncomfortable situations, you need to develop a certain routine when it comes to your oral hygiene.
Brush your teeth at least twice a day
This is quite the bare minimum, you need to brush your teeth when you get up in the morning and before you go to sleep. And when you brush them, make sure that you do the job thoroughly, wash every nook and cranny of your jaw, since we eat at least three times a day, and while we sleep, all kinds of bacteria accumulates in our mouth, considering that usually they are closed and we breathe through our noses. Cigarettes, coffee, fast food and sweets that we eat or drink are practically tooth decay factories, plus they have a tendency to give our teeth that darkish yellow glow that is quite hard to remove, especially if we let it linger for too long.
Make sure you have a good toothbrush and that you buy a new one every month or two
The toothbrush plays an important role in this routine and people are constantly making new types of toothbrushes in order to improve its brushing potential. Also bear in mind that every time you use your toothbrush, it becomes less and less effective, which is why, after some time, it won’t be as useful to you as it was when you purchased and used it for the first time.
Don’t forget to floss
Unfortunately a toothbrush is not omnipotent, and there are areas that a toothbrush can’t possibly reach, but food can squeeze in and get stuck between our teeth. This is why you need to floss in addition to brushing your teeth. Try to use mouthwash once you are done brushing and flossing, so that you can strengthen your teeth and eliminate any bad smell that can come out of your mouth.
Visit your dentist
The best way to know for sure that you have healthy teeth is to have them examined and have a dentist perform an action of dental cleaning. This way, you will know for sure if you are doing a good job, and know whether all of you teeth are healthy. It is not uncommon that, despite your efforts, you still need to have your teeth fixed and also, we do not have control over the growth of our teeth. There is always a chance that we may need to wear braces for some time, so that everything stays in its place. Another thing that we do not have any power to control are our wisdom teeth, and it happens very often that they need to be removed since they are bad from the very beginning. Our teeth may not be as white as we expect them to be, this is also an issue that can be solved by visiting a dentist. To sum up, dentists will provide you with any necessary feedback, and he or she will tell you if you accidentally neglected some area and if you need to pay special attention to it.
It may be a pain in the neck to take all of these precautions just to keep your teeth healthy, but this pain is only a metaphorical one, while a toothache brings pain that is one hundred percent real. Always remember the old saying “better to be safe than sorry”.
