Introduction: How to Transform a Vintage Stereo Cabinet Into a Stunning Sofa Console Table

Just because something is old doesn't mean it can't be beautiful again. I transformed my Papa's vintage stereo cabinet into a stunning sofa console table for my living room. For the full post about this makeover, check it out at Vintage Stereo Cabinet Furniture Makeover.

Step 1: Gut the Old Stereo

Before I ripped out all the radio, record player and speakers, I tested it to see if I could get it to work. Lynn told me that it hadn’t been working for a long time. However I thought I would give it a try.

The verdict…unfortunately no music was flowing. So it was a gut job. This is everything I pulled out.

Step 2: Remove the Louver Panels

Remove the fixed louver panels to make way for new open shelving.

Step 3: Add Shelving and Trim

After removing the speakers I was left with large openings. To break up these open areas I added shelves. I also added decorative molding to dress up the shelves and hide some holes left over from the demo.

Step 4: Prime & Chalk Paint

I primed and then used a homemade chalk paint recipe to paint the over the wood finish. Here is a link to the Chalk Paint recipe: DIY Chalk Paint Recipe.

Step 5: Distressing & Antiquing the Paint Finish

Using a high grit sandpaper or block distress the edges and corners of the cabinet to give it a little aging. The shabby chic look is very trendy.

Step 6: Apply a Wax Finish

Finally to protect the new finish apply 2 coats of wax. I recommend Anne Sloane's Clear Soft Wax. To learn more about painting with chalk paint check out my post How to Make & Use DIY Chalk Paint to Makeover Furniture.
