Introduction: How to Flip Food

About: I enjoy photography, horticulture and carpentry, and am almost always doing something relating to of those things.
We see it all the time on tv, and at restaurants. The cooks and chefs have no need for a spatula, after all, they can just flip what ever they have in the pan, by throwing it in the air. Well, in this instructable, i'll help you learn to do it.

In foods class, they told us we could learn by practicing with a piece of toast. That is how i'm going to show you. I've never tried it, but, my dad said that he learned (at the Culinary Institute of America) with frozen peas.

Step 1: What You Need

Well, to learn how to do this, you will need:

One pan
One piece of bread
A toaster that doesn't want it's picture taken
and food you actually want to eat (like veggies)

Step 2: Toast Your Bread

The bread won't slide very well if it's not toasted, so pop it in, and wait.

Step 3: The Technique

Now that you've got your toast, you're ready to flip. First, get the rhythm going. Shake the bread back and forth a little, get a feel for how it moves. When you're ready, make a final push forward of the pan, while tilting up. During this move, you will make a circular motion with the pan:

You push forward, tilt up, bring the pan up a bit, and then pull back (as you catch the toast). Just keep trying this until you get it down, and are able to do it successfully every time. Adjust your technique as you see what happens.

Step 4: Tips for Real Cooking

When you're actually using this in your cooking, here are some tips:

Make sure the pan is greased well enough for your food to slide easily, this will make the flip easier.

When you are just starting, a "fold" is good to try, so you can get used to it, but not ruin the food or get burnt.

If you are doing something like eggs, make sure the egg is solid before trying to flip it.

Sandwiches shouldn't be flipped too much, or they will start to break. They are a good thing to practice with though (grilled cheese)

Step 5: Get Cookin!

I hope this has helped, now you're ready to impress your Special Someone when making a romantic dinner for her = D

Let me know of any suggestions you have, I'd be happy to add them.

Oh yeah, and most of all...HAVE FUN.
