Introduction: How to Grow Sprouts in a Glass Jar
I am very excited to have recently learned how to grow my own sprouts to eat on salads, sandwiches, and more! After testing a few growing methods, I have found that growing them in a glass jar is the easiest and fastest way.
- Sprouting Seeds (This includes alfalfa, broccoli, clover, radish and many more. Check out this list of over 100 kinds from SproutPoeple.org.)
- Medium Glass Jar
- Cheesecloth
- Rubber Band
- Water
Step 1: Soak Your Seeds
Fill the jar half way with water, and add 2 tablespoons of sprouting seeds. Swirl the water around a bit to get as many seeds as possible to sink. Cover the opening of the jar with a double layer of cheesecloth, and secure it with a rubber band. Leave the seeds to soak overnight (8-12 hours)
Step 2: Drain and Rinse the Seeds
Drain all the water from the jar through the cheesecloth by turning the jar upside down. Give it a few shakes if the seeds are clogging the holes in the cheesecloth.
Turn the jar upright, and tap it on a counter a couple times to get all the seeds back to the bottom.
Rinse the seeds by pouring in new water through the cheesecloth, swirl water around in the jar and drain through the cheesecloth as you did before.
Step 3: Rinse Regularly and Watch Them Grow
At this point all you will need to do is rinse and drain your sprouts twice per day. Fill the jar with water, swirl the water around, and drain the water. Give the jar a few good shakes when draining to get all the water out. Tap the bottom of the jar on the counter a few times to knock the sprouts back down. In 3 to 5 days you will have a full jar of sprouts, so start thinking about what you want to eat them with!

When I started to grow sprouts the tutorial I used back then said that when sprouts are ready, spread them to direct sunlight for a little while, they get some nice, healthy, delicious greenness, and after that put them in the fridge. You should try it too! :)

Thanks for the tip :) I will try that next time to see what happens. I am happy with the amount of green they have now, but I will try it just to see what happens.

Where do you keep them? on a window frame or bench top. Plus
how long do they keep or last for. Do you have to put them in the fridge?

I keep them on my kitchen counter out of direct sunlight. When they are done growing, I put them in an airtight container in the fridge. They stay good about a week from when they go in the fridge.
