Introduction: How to Jump a Dead Car Battery

Some time in your life you'll try to start you car and nothing will happen. You'll also notice that your lights and radio won't turn on. When this happens, most likely what's wrong is that your battery is dead.

Here are the following steps one should take when this happens...

Step 1: Materials/ Requirements

When jumping a dead car battery you will need following…
~ Jumper cables
~ One running car

Requirements:
These instructions are meant for people with common sense and who have a general grasp on cars.

Step 2: Preparing the Vehicles

You need to have both vehicles in close proximity of each other, so that the cables can reach both batteries. Then locate the hood release lever (which is usually located in the cabin under the steering wheel) and pull it. After you have the hoods on both vehicles up you’re ready to begin.

Step 3: Connecting the Jumper Cables

WARNING!
Never allow the positive and negative clamps to touch. If both the ends of the clamps touch the cables will arch and could cause major damage to your vehicle and also cause bodily harm or injury.
If you connect the cables out of order you run the possibility of sending electricity back through your vehicle, causing your electrical system to fail and the possibility of needing to be replaced.

When connecting the jumper cables you have to attach them in this order…

~ Connect the negative clamp to the negative terminal on the running vehicle
~ Connect the other negative clamp to the negative terminal on the dead vehicle
~ Connect the positive clamp to the positive terminal on the running vehicle
~ Connect the other positive clamp to the positive terminal on the dead vehicle

Step 4: Charging

You should wait about a minute or two to allow the dead battery to charge. After a minute or two of charging, try starting the vehicle. If the vehicle doesn't crank just wait a few more minutes to allow it to build up charge.

Step 5: Wrapping Things Up

After the dead car finally turns over DO NOT turn it off for at least 5 min. This will allow it to partially recharge the battery. The last step is to disconnect the jumper cables. To properly remove jumper cables you must remove them in this order…

~ Remove the positive clamp from the positive terminal on the dead vehicle
~ Remove the positive clamp from the positive terminal on the running vehicle
~ Remove the negative clamp from the negative terminal on the dead vehicle
~ Remove the negative clamp from the negative terminal on the running vehicle

After closing the hood on both vehicles you’re ready to go.
