Introduction: How to Make LOLCats, Meme Cats, Cat Macros, or Cat Pictures With Funny Captions
I've been reading the internet for a while, trying to finish it. I haven't done so yet, but I *have* determined, through rigorous, scientific, statistical sampling that the internet is 35.4% cat, within a 2% margin of error.
One of the more popular forms of cat on the internet, along with cat blogs, stuff on my cat, cats in sinks, cat vlogs, cat podcasts, and cat twitter, is LOLCats, also known as LOL cats, meme cats, cat macros, and I can has cheezburger cats.
For me, it all started with lime cat, but I'm sure the roots go deeper, to some sort of paleolithic cat wall carving.
Step 1: Acquire Cat Images
Given the aforementioned 35.4% cat composition of the interwebs, there really is no shortage of cat imagery. But flickr is always a great source of creative commons pictures.
Step 2: Find the Right Picture
With so many cat pictures to choose from, finding the right cat picture can be tough.
It might take some time, but you need to find something that makes you say, "Damn. That's some funny-ass cat right there."
Step 3: Edit Your Cat
Copy your cat into your favorite graphic editor. Here I'm using GIMP, because it's free.
Step 4: Caption Your Cat
Next you'll need to add a caption to your cat. But what should your cat say?
Well, there's a great analysis of LOLCat speak, here, but this is why the picture has to inspire you.
LOLCat vocabulary does have certain highly frequent memes and words, including: "I'M", "IN", "UR" (your), "INVISIBLE", "HAS" (have), "MAH" (my), "HAI", (hi) and "BUCKET". These are then combined into forms like "IM IN UR FRIDGE, EATING UR FOODS", or "INVISIBLE BICYCLE."
In this case, I saw jumping. I saw bright colors. I saw an attack. I saw.... INVISIBLE PINATA!
Generally LOLCats type in white and in all caps, but there's no fixed rule.
Step 5: Feed the Need....the Need for LOLCats
Meme cats has quite a few cats, as does i can has cheezburger. If you want, there's even the LOLCat generator.
But feel free to diversify.

Its not stealing if they give them away. I share all of mine under the CC-attribution-noncommercial license. That means you can do whatever you want with them, as long as I get credit for the original, and you don't sell it.
