How to Make a Bath Bunny (or Terrycloth Rabbit)

A Bath Bunny is a cute little rabbit made from a washcloth, some ribbon or rubber bands, and a small bar of soap. Not only are they decorative, they are convenient as your soap and washcloth are right there together (if you can bear to take the little fella apart).

The Bath Bunny in this tutorial is an uncommon variation of the BooBoo Bunny made to hold a small square object in it's "tummy". They make great inexpensive gifts for ladies and children and can hold any item of similar size to the bar of soap mentioned in the next section. What will you do with your Bath Bunny? The sky is the limit!

Step 1: Gathering Materials

You are going to need...

1) A wash cloth.
These can be any color or quality but should be at least a normal-sized washcloth or they may be too small.

2) A small wrapped bar of soap no bigger than two by three inches.

The wrapping part is important as it keeps the soap clean and dry and helps make the bunny more colorful. Other items you could use instead of soap include tins of candy or mints, plastic eggs, small bars of candy (tapped together if too small), small boxes of chocolate or anything you can think of that is around the size of the soap bar mentioned. It does not have to be exact, though it should be at least one by two inches.

3) Rubber bands and/or ribbon (not pictured).

The ribbon should be no more than a half inch wide and should not have wires. Small rubber bands such as the kind found in office supplies or used on hair work better than large ones here, though should not be used at all if the bunny will be kept somewhere moist like a bathroom as the rubber will be eaten away by time and water.

The materials pictured in this project were found at a local discount store and cost me a total of $0.90 a bunny to make. Look for mutlipacks of soap and washcloths and search in discount bins for inexpensive craft ribbons and rubber bands.

Step 2: Step 1

Lay the washcloth flat.

Take two of the corners opposite of one another and fold them inward so they are overlapping in the center.

If there is a tag on your washcloth, use the corners nearest the tag as the ones to be folded inwards, making sure the tag goes on the inside. This will hide the tag for a more attractive bunny.

Step 3: Step 2

Starting at the not flat outer edge created by folding the corners in, roll the edge inwards towards the center. Repeat this on the other side.

You should get something looking similar to the picture. It does not have to be perfect! Just roll it as tightly and evenly as you can.

Step 4: Step 3

Place the wrapped bar of soap about 3/4 of the way in on one edge of the wash cloth with the narrow ends pointing outwards. Placing it this far in makes it a lot easier to fold over so your soap will stay in the rabbit's tummy. The exact positioning will vary by the thickness and width of the item place inside the bunny.

Step 5: Step 4

Fold the wash cloth in half so the pointed ends are touching. The soap should be now wrapped in the washcloth.

Press the soap backwards into the bend as far as you can with your finger. If you have rubber bands you may place a rubber band where your finger was to keep the soap in place. A rubber band is not needed, however, it can make things a little easier.

Step 6: Step 5

Fold the long ends of the washcloth upwards and towards the bar of soap forming a loop.

Tie a ribbon or rubber band around the base of the loop. There should be long ends sticking out at the top.

Step 7: Step 6

Once the ribbon is tied on, pull the loose ends lightly to "fluff" them, pulling them apart. They should be standing like rabbit ears.

Place a finger inside the "head" from the side to puff out the head. If the head looks too small or the body is too loose to grip the bar of soap carefully pull the fabric through the tied-on ribbon upwards away from the body and into the head to tighten. Retie the ribbon afterward to make sure it is tight to keep your Bath Bunny together.

You can draw on eyes with a permanent marker or glue on beads or wiggly eyes if you wish. If you choose to glue on eyes bear in mind they may fall off if the washcloth is ever used.
